Revolt!
Soon after the Pro-Consuls arrival, he is informed of a disturbance in Insubria; a small host of tribal rebels has risen in revolt against Rome, with an unknown number of other clans rumoured to be in league with the rebels. Furthermore, across the Alps, the Allobroges have likewise taken up arms against the Republic and will soon be looking to lay siege to Narbo. Their host numbers at least eight thousand men.
Roman scouts report a sizeable host of the Insubres near Mediolanum, looking to attack the Roman coloniae. Emissaries from the Cenomani and Veneti tribes have offered their support to Lepidus.

The Insubres apparently fought off the Roman cavalry handily, for they return battered and without much information. Unfortunately, some are captured, revealing to them the size and strength of Lepidus' forces.
The Veneti and Cenomani muster their own tribal warriors, ostensibly to join up with Lepidus' host, but they are at least a few days behind the main Roman force.

As Lepidus' legions arrive, he finds the Gauls drawn up on a low hillock outside the city, apparently expecting the arrival of the Roman legions. Lacking siege equipment, they were unable to breach Mediolanum's walls, but this has not stopped them from attacking any Roman citizen they can lay their hands on.

As he forms up, Lepidus receives word that the enemy is somehow harassing his supply lines to the south. Defeat here would surely leave him in an unenviable position.
Battle of Mediolanum
The Romans had no tricks up their sleeve, trying simply to push up the hill and remove the Gauls from the high ground. At the beginning, it went horribly. The Gauls, fresh and prepared, pushed the romans back in every section of the line. Only the valour of Lepidus prevented a rout on the right flank, but in the end the commander was forced to give ground and fall back as they were repulsed from the hill. Fortunately for him, his left wing managed to break through after some heavy fighting, which swung the momentum back in favour of the Romans. Lepidus' own ninth legion carried the day in the end by pushing through the centre to take the hill - though they suffered horrific losses in the process.
The Gauls were driven back, with heavy losses. The Romans are able to recover a good portion of their wounded, however, which allays the damage somewhat. Unfortunately for Lepidus, the Insubres were able to retreat into their lands in good order.
Result: Pyyrhic victory
Total lost per flank: 225 on the left - 125 after wounded 1000 on the right - 600 after wounded 787 in centre - 442 after wounded
Roman losses: 2012 Total dead after wounded roll: 1167
Romans win a close victory ⅔ flanks Barbarians retreat in good order
Barbarian losses: 1887
Lepidus: free Abbo: Wounded Divoc: Free Brannus: Wounded
Other results: Lepidus' ninth gain two veterancy points. The Legio I gains two veterancy points The Legio III gains one veterancy point

Lepidus issues 7K to replenish the Legions. After licking some wounds the legions dispatched spies into enemy territory to find their foe. Lepidus would march in there with a turtle pace, being sure not to get caught in the thick woods. He did search for a village he could loot. He needed money, a lot of it!

Cowed by Roman victory, the Veneti and Cenomani offer each a detachment of allied cavalry to assist in the quashing of the rebellion. Lepidus’ pillaging of Insubres land nets him 10,000 denarii, though this inflames the tribals and soon many more appear to be joining up with the enemy.

Lepidus pursues the Insubres to their capital, a fortified city with thick wooden walls and earthwork defences. It appears that the tribe wishes to simply wait Lepidus out, for they have fortified their position and prepared for a lengthy siege.
