The rivalry between House Tyrell and House Lannister at the royal court had finally reached its tipping point. Mace Tyrell, having tried to regain control over the Iron Throne following Kevan Lannister's death, had been forced to flee the Red Keep after a confrontation in the great hall with Queen Cersei. Now his army was laying siege to the Red Keep and were in the process of securing total control over the rest of the capital.
The Tyrell Army numbered 35,000 men, the strongest force in the capital by sheer numbers. Yet the Red Keep was no easy victory, having served as the seat of the Iron Throne for 300 years. Any assault would be costly, and who knew how many secret escape routes were hidden inside its walls.
To shore up support for his cause, Mace himself were claiming that Cersei Lannister has no right to rule and were manipulating her young son to seize power over the Seven Kingdoms for her own wicked goals. Her attempt on his life, a dutiful servant of King Tommen, and her current allegations by the Faith were proof enough. Now the battle for power in King's Landing could only end in bloodshed.
Tyrell Army: 14,000 Light Infantry 7,000 Archers 7,000 Men-at-Arms 3,500 Light Cavalry 3,500 Knights
Total: 35,000 men

As the Tyrells lay siege to Red Keep the High Septon sends out the Poor Fellows to keep the peace in the city, he did not believe the Tyrells would butcher the people, not after all the effort they put into buying their loyalty.. but, he would not risk their safety. The streets came to be patrolled by groups of Poor Fellows, in rough spun wool, blood red stars upon their breasts. Patrolling with simple weapons they sought to discourage chaos, murder, and rape among the smallfolk, and most importantly stop Tyrell troops from taking advantage of the populace.

(Just gonna respond here instead of making my own thread)
Lannister troops were billeted in Hayford, a rally called by the Queen Cersei to her cousin, Devan Lannister, Warden of the West. Devan remained in the Westerlands, taking over the affairs left by Tywin and Kevan, which meant that command of the troops fell to Lord Brax, who had been appointed by Cersei's cousin. When the raven arrived, spelling out what was happening in King's Landing. With Ser Devan absent, a war council was called and a raven sent to Casterly Rock. Within his tent, Brax deliberated with his fellow nobles and commanders on what was to be done. Hours would go by before an answer was decided upon...
And, during those hours, Lannister troops were not seen approaching the city's walls. Hours continued to go by and not even a raven was sent by Lord Brax. In the end, Brax had decided to hold his troops back. The host of Tyrell was greater than theirs and he was certain that they would not be able to remote put a dent in those lines. After all, he had enough men to possibly cover two or three gates, but Lord Tyrell had the men to both besiege the Red Keep and sally forth, crushing his host. He knew that there were little remaining levies in the Westerlands.
So, as a result, Brax kept his forces at Hayford and watched things from the North.

Lord Tarly had sent a raven back home confirming that his son and Dickon's young lady wife had made it safely and were in good health, and inquiring after their journey. Then he set out for the Great Sept of Baelor alongside ten of his closest household men. Upon cresting Visenya's Hill, he found the massive structure buzzing with activity, and elected not to enter, as it seemed the High Sparrow was taking petitioners or some such thing, as a line of the city's common folk seemed to be pressing toward the door. The Tarly contingent turned away from the main doors and walked into the gardens where Randyll knelt among the flowers. He was not an exceptionally religious man, and he did not come often to pray. Even know, it was his own counsel he sought more than any of the Seven. He had become tired of being yanked about like a pawn for two fools. Mace pulled him by his oath like a knight leads a horse - first in defense of the Targaryens, then bending the knee to Robert, only to crown Renly in rebellion again, and finally in service to the Lannisters of the Crownlands. No matter what side they stood on, the Lord of Highgarden would send his bannerman out at the head of the vanguard and then claim any victory for himself and House Tyrell.
And then there was Cersei. It was a long time since Randyll had stood in the presence of anyone who was so comfortable manipulating people to their face as the Queen Mother seemed to be. She was not wrong about Mace Tyrell, and she had not been wrong about his own resentment towards his liege lord, but he disliked being played for a puppet. He was of House Tarly, and for a warrior of House Tarly, Oaths were more than simple words. The dilemma was unusual for a man known for his decisiveness, both on the field of battle and in his conversation. He was not half as dedicated to honor as Eddard Stark had been, but he still found himself learning a lesson that the former Hand of the King had learned the hard way - the capital was no place for straightforward men. He had watched Mace Tyrell forsake oath after oath, and from their conversation, Cersei put no stock in promises or oaths either. So, as he knelt in a garden outside the Great Sept of Balor, Randyll Tarly had to ask himself which oath he held most important. He knew that he already had the answer.
Even as he rose, he heard sounds of shouting and commotion. Making his way back around towards the gates of the Sept, he found himself looking into the Hall of lamps, where the High Sparrow stood, barely distinguishable from the men he spoke to, men wearing the roughspun robes of the Poor Fellows. When the Poor Fellows darted away, presumably to follow whatever orders had been given, Lord Tarly approached. "Pardon, Your Eminence," he said, "I suppose you might know the reason for this commotion?"

“We are to secure the city, Lord Tarly.” The High Septon said plainly, his bony fingers gripped around a heavy oak cane. “It seems the Queen Mother has attempted to take Tyrell’s life, and now Tyrell lays siege to the Red Keep..” He snorted. "Do you believe you can put an end to this? Cersei must face her trial Lord Tarly, and if need be another trial will be held for these concerns. You are respected by the nobility in this city, perhaps even the Queen Mother." __________________________ The High Septon comes to the siege lines to speak with Mace Tyrell, accompanied by the Warriors’ Sons and a small hoard of Poor Fellows.

Lord Tarly's face tightens, his mouth forming an even harsher line that usual, as his eyes flash with anger. "What foolishness is this? Was all of the scheming not enough for the bitch?" he snaps, anger blazing forward for a moment before following it up with a glance towards the High Septon and continuing in a more mellow tone, "I apologize for the outburst your holiness. It simply seems a mistake to be rowing among those that are meant to hold this city in the face of pirates on the coast and a dragon in the south." He pauses for a moment, then considers who he is talking to, "And a needless threat to the common folk of this city who only seek to live their lives."
He waited for a few more minutes as the Warrior's Sons gathered and then spoke again, "It would probably be good for me to speak with Lord Tyrell, since he is the more available of the two commanders at this moment. Would you and your entourage care to accompany us at this meeting?"
Lord Tarly joins the High Septon as he arrives at the command center of the besiegers to speak with the Lord of Highgarden.

Both Lord Tarly and the High Septon are invited to Mace Tyrell's quarters at the foot of Aegon's High Hill upon their arrival. Mace had rented a house from a merchant, providing him with decent lodgings for the time being. He welcomed the two in the main hall, offering them wine. He seemed jovial enough, despite the circumstances.
"Your Holiness, Lord Tarly, I welcome you both. Please have a seat. I must excuse the current predicament we find ourselves in, but the fate of the realm hangs in the balance. I pray that common sense and decency triumphs."

The former commander of the Goldcloaks, now demoted to mere captain, a man of rather duvious reputation -and known to be a darling of the court, brother to ser Osmund of the Kingsguard-, Ser Osfryd Kettleback, arrives to the siege lines with a batallion of men. He arrives wearing the gold cloak of his station and a plain suit of plate and mail, an open bascinet over the head. He requests to see Lord Tyrell or whosoever is in charge of leading the siege to the castle.

“No wine for me.” The High Septon said, pushing the class away. He was a simple man, with little need for such things. “I have come to discuss these important matters Mace, the people are endangered by this siege. Margery and Tommen as well. Cersei must leave the castle immediately, her trial will not be delayed by this battle line, not by your word or her own. If no one can convince her to leave.. I will be forced to make the announcement, if she does not come out to be tried she will be found guilty in absentia. Though I believe this would risk the lives of both Margery and Tommen within.” He folded his arms, his mud brown eyes fuming.

The commander of the Goldcloaks is welcomed into Lord Tyrell's quarters, flanked by guardsmen. Mace eyed the man with suspicion - was he one of Cersei's henchmen? His brother had been raised to the Kingsguard by her, and according to rumors had slept with Queen Cersei herself.
"Commander Kettleblack, welcome. How can I be of assistance? I hope the city watch have no issue with the movement and allocation of my troops in the capital?"
Mace turned to the High Septon, nodding in agreement.
"I can assure your Holiness, you have my word that this siege is only against a criminal who seeks power for herself. The people in King's Landing will not be harmed, nor will their daily lives be hindered by this siege. It is for their sake, for King Tommen and my sweet Margaery too, that this siege must continue. And you will not find me in disagreement, your Holiness, about Queen Cersei's trial. If Queen Cersei agrees, my battle lines will allow her through to the Great Sept so she can face justice."
The thought of Margaery in the clutches of that witch, potentially tortured or worse, made the Lord of Highgarden fill with anger.

“Good, if I have your word on the matter I will send word immediately. Should Cersei refuse she must be found guilty In absentia.” He said, his lips twisted into a frown. “These matters are base and vial, I came to this city to provide faith and justice, and no Queen Mother, Lord, or Lady will stop me.. Lord Mace.” He added at the end as he rose to his feet.

"Because, what would be the point, then?"He said. Stating the obvious. "I'd rather stay farting at the barracks waiting this to be over. If I screw you over this, Lord Tyrell, what do I stand to gain?"
He smiles, cruelly. "I'd just be inside with the Queen waiting for your thousands of men to slaughter me with a pig, which isn't my priorities, your Lordship"

The High Septon strode forward, surrounded by the Noble and Puissant Order of the Warrior's Sons. His small hoard of stars, his Poor Fellows, followed close behind them. He called up toward the battlements, Ser Wells having stopped him from approaching further, to stay safe from arrows. “By order of the Seven Cersei is to face trial today, tell her to put an end to this nonsense!” He bellowed, his voice rising over the crowd, the man had a truly impressive set of lungs from his countless years of sermons. “Mace Tyrell has sworn to stand aside, any that stand between the Queen and the gods’ justice will be judged by the Faith!” A scowl was etched into the man’s face.
