"The men are ready to march, Consul. We should cross the Alps while the weather holds."
Sulla entered Lepidus' command tent dressed in full military garb, obviously feeling much more at home here than he ever had in Rome. While he was of good stock and noble breeding, the Sullae had not been long involved in the world of high politics.

Lepidus stood bending over a map, searching his position and looking for opportunities to march. A sigh was let out just as Sulla came in, the sigh wasnt for him, Sulla's arrival stemmend lepidus happy.
"Ah sulla what an honor to have you along side me. " Lepidus extended a hand in greetings before turning to the map. "I have five legions, I want you to command the cavalry for now and scout the enemy positions. Secure our marching paths. We need more high placed sons of Rome to help us lead this force. Do you know of any that could serve us?" Lepidus asked, eager to continue his story.

"There is an Appius Claudius in Rome who is of high birth and holds no office this year." Sulla suggested, after a moment's thought. He recalled that the man was one of Metellus' ilk, among the arch-conservatives.

Lepidus thinks as Sulla takes his time to respond to him. "We should extend an offer to join us then. Make it so" Lepidus commanded. "The senate will be on our asses for results but I will not march into the unknown, dying and giving reason or cause for the people to rebel. We must play this smart Sulla, dispatch the scouts. Get Claudius here. Then we shall move" Lepidus said as he looked at Sulla with hope. They got this he thought.

"As you say, Consul. We should look to link up with the other legions under Sertorius. If the man has any sense, he will be looking for our coming across the mountains."
Sulla did not understand why Sertorius had so easily relinquished any chance at glory. Perhaps he wished to see Lepidus blunder and rush in to the rescue. Nonetheless, the Praetor saluted.
"I shall ride out at once."

Mugillanus, recently arrived from his villa after setting his affairs in order before the campaign, made his presence known at the consul's quarters. Dressed in a relatively simple tunic and a cloak, the only mark of authority being the six lictors armed with axes that attended him.
"Ave, Consul. May Mars and Minerva smile upon us, should we be so lucky to meet our enemy in battle."

Lepidus stood near a window opening as Mugi was announced. Lepidus took a moment before turning to the man. Lepidus drew a breath and said "Mugillanus, it's good to see you here." Lepidus extended and arm in greetings. "I suppose you came to join us on the campagin" Lepidus asked. All he could do was think of the campaign, with sulla still gone he was restless.

Sulla returns, immediately riding for the Consul's tent, sweat pouring from his brow as he removed his helmet and saluted.
"Consul. The Alpine passes are clear, but I bring ill news. Gauls are moving south, in league with the Cimbri. At least twenty thousand."
Sulla gave Mugillanus a brief nod of acknowledgement.
"Whether they intend to enter Italy, we did not find out. I say we do not give them the chance."

Lepidus grinned a little. Good and bad news he thought.
"Prepare the legions, we march to meet them. " Lepidus said vigorously.

I pray the army is in good enough shape for another confrontation with the barbarians?" Lepidus nodded "Sulla, second and third legion is yours. Migillanus, fourth and fifth are under your direct command. I will take the first as the vanguard." Lepidus looked at his map. Tracing his finger through possible routes. "Sulla, send word to my co consul. Say I request him to speed march from a more western approuch. We will meet the enemy head on. Prepare your legions as one. " Lepidus had a slave hand him his breastplate. The beautiful greeks had made room for more practical male slaves from all over the republic, able to do all the work required with campaining.

"We still do not know where the Cimbri are, Consul. I shall send riders to Sertorius, but he may be cut off from our approach."
Sulla saluted, then departed to get the legions prepared for the march over the Alps. Many of the officers he knew by sight - they had marched with him under Marius against Jugurtha some years ago. It was easy to fall back into the same pattern. Sulla was a soldier's soldier, and was known for spending more time with his rank and file than commanders usually would. Within the hour, they had packed up their encampment and were preparing to move out, risking the Alpine snows for a quick road into Cisalpine Gaul.

"Pulcher" Lepidus said as he saw the man. "Good having you here walk with me" Lepidus said as he gestured Pulcher to follow him. They moved out of the command tent, slaves being already busy moving stuff out. The camp was busy, the soldier getting ready to break it up and dash for the alpiune mountain passes. "I want to offer you a command" Lepidus said as he stood still, near one of the horse barracks. "The legions are divided for now but I would be honored if you lead the horses into battle." Lepidus starred at the man, gazing his reaction.
