”I know exactly what you mean.” She too felt the mockery behind her back. ‘Scale-face’ they called her, and worse. But never to her face. Some of her ladies she also suspected of idle gossip, for most were there for favour and kinship rather than being her real friends. The mention of Cressen made her a little melancholy, she missed the old Maester that had loved her like a grandfather. He loved her father, too, and paid dearly for it. ”I never thought I would miss Dragonstone.” Not the castle, but the people within it. It was a sad place, save for a few fond memories. A hint of her sadness touched her smile. ”Even the Wall had a sense of adventure. The Red Keep is just so dreary.” A comfortable prison for her, a bird in a cage. "Things were less complicated when I could play soldiers and hide-and-seek in Aegon's chambers. But this keep... it's just... a sorry place. I feel it's build upon lies"Said Devan. "Now, my father says I must behave according to my station and is, no wonder, looking for a lass to have me married to"He added, with a grunt and visible annoyance. "I hope you get to make a royal progress soon, I wish to go back to Winterfell, or maybe see the Eyrie in spring. If we ever see spring. I dream of it"

Marriage. It would come for them all, the heaviest of duties that man and woman had to endure. Her parents had been a loveless match, only a fool could deny that, and Shireen had come to realise they were both made worse people for it. The thought of being promised to a man like that made her stomach turn. It turned more still at the thought of Devan happy and contented in the arms of another.
”You are too young to be married.” She scoffed, trying to make the notion real in her head. Her father’s words rang in her ears, the droning of duty and service to the realm. ”We will. Father will surely wish for me see the realm before I am to rule it.” Shireen wanted to see the world, not rule it. With Devan she would ride from Dorne to the Wall, away from the bloodstained bricks of the Red Keep. She dreamed of stealing away into the wilds, where they would finally be alone.

"Well, I'm not so sure, lady Hayford remarried this year to my brother and she was left a widow while still a babe"He joked, with a chuckle. His brother would hate waiting all these years for his wife to grow. "Aye, he will. And they will all love you, commoners and lords alike. And if they don't... well, they can plough themselves"

Such was the way of the cruel world. "There might be a lot of ploughing, in that case. Lots of new babes will be born to celebrate my coming." Her mother would surely turn beet red if she would hear her precious princess speak so crudely. The mental image amused her. "They have not found me a husband yet either. I suspect my time will also come soon."

"That will be much needed after winter: in spring we'll have a lot of babes to celebrate the coming of a new season"He said, cheerfully, laughing at Shireen's crude jape. "You're a princess of the realm, so, undoubtedly. I will mourn the day they marry you to one of those... lordlings"Devan could even see her married to one of her big-eared kinsmen.

With the campaigns in the Stormlands wrapping up, under Lord Morrigan and Lord Arryn, Lord Caron had gone forth to reclaim Nightsong. He left the castle with his newly wedded Dondarrion wife, who was with child. Rolland returns to the capital as King Stannis desired his return once he had reclaimed his home and served the Crown in the Stormlands.
