He would find him on the lower floor sat on a bench, a longsword in one hand and a whetstone the other slowly stroking the blade back and forth in a rhythmic motion. As Rhaegar's steps echo across the room the motion momentarily stops and Jamie looks up.

”That sword is sharp enough to give Lord Baratheon a shave, Ser.”
Rhaegar said as he stepped into the room. His own sword was sheathed, fastened securely at his hip. A ruby glimmered at the end of the pommel.
”How do you find your duties? You wear the white cloak well.” He offered the younger man a courteous smile.

He answers respectfully. "Though I still have much to learn if I am to live up to the expectations of the likes of Dayne or Selmy."

Rhaegar took a seat on the bench opposite.
"You may speak plainly. There are none here to listen to us." He stared at Jaime expectantly. "To wear the white is a lonely life. Especially for.. Well. For you, I suspect."
The Prince offered a smile of sympathy. Aerys and Tywin had once been friends, but that had long since turned sour in the throes of his father's paranoia.

"Very well" Jaime said hesitantly "I will admit it is not what I expected, and yes it can be quite lonely." Jaime's thoughts turn momentarily to Cersei "Boring too. The singers tell of the glory and bravery of the Kingsguard, but they leave out the part of standing around all day." Jaime says as he places his sword aside.

”Glory is a fleeting thing, but an oath is a duty that lasts till death.” Rhaegar smiled sadly. ”Glory makes for a better song, I think.” Dawn’s light crept through the window, and for a moment he seemed to shimmer like milkglass as it caught the silver of his hair.
”It is a difficult burden to bear for a young man, heir to a house. Never to wed or father sons of his own.” He looked at the young knight directly. ”Do you ever wish things had been different?”

"What man young or old does not dream of future possibilities or past regrets." Jaime answers. "Though, perhaps neither is wise, for we cannot change the past nor see the future." Turning back to the Prince "And as you said, the duty is held till death, and I don't fancy meeting the stranger anytime soon."

Turning back to the Prince "And as you said, the duty is held till death, and I don't fancy meeting the stranger anytime soon." "I don't suppose any of us do." Rhaegar allowed himself a chuckle. "They say in the East that all men must die just as surely as all men must serve."For a moment considered Jaime's words more profoundly than they were perhaps intended. Dreams are just dreams, Elia had said. Perhaps no man could truly see the future as it would be. "My own duty lies out there." He gestured to the open window. "Out in the field, facing Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark and Jon Arryn." There was no fear or reluctance in his voice, but neither was there the warrior's excitement at the promise of glory in great battle.

Having rode up the Roseroad to the port of Duskendale, and then catching a ship to Dragonstone, Ser Theodore Peake arrived at immense and ancestral castle of the Targaryen dynasty. At the gatehouse, the Reachman showed the letter from Ser Barristan Selmy, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, which allowed him entry into the black-stoned keep. When news of this letter had been spoken, with his brother, John, his lordly brother was immensely pleased by what this could potentially mean! There had not been such an offer to House Peake since Aegon III when Amaury, Lord Unwin's nephew, and his bastard half-brother, Ser Mervyn Flowers, had been given a letter bearing the seal of the Kingsguard's leading knight. John encouraged his brother to go to Dragonstone and see what would happen.
And so, after being led to what served as the White Sword Tower, Theodore entered and waited.

John encouraged his brother to go to Dragonstone and see what would happen. And so, after being led to what served as the White Sword Tower, Theodore entered and waited. After a few moments of waiting the doors opened. Theodore Peake found himself before the Lord Commander himself, seated by a table writing a few notes in the White Book. Barristan rose and strode up to the Reachman. He held forward his hand to shake. "Ser Theodore Peake, welcome to Dragonstone. I am Ser Barristan Selmy. Come, take a seat."The two men sat down together before Barristan continued. "Since Aegon the Conqueror there have been seven members of the kingsguard. To faithfully serve our king and protect him and his kin, to hold no other masters nor family besides our brothers in white - that is our purpose. Only those knights of sound mind, strength and ability in battle are deemed worthy of consideration for our brotherhood. We have sadly lost Ser Gerold Hightower, one of the greatest men to have ever served as lord commander... and a good friend."Barristan paused for a moment before continuing. "I've heard of the tourney at Highgarden. You and your brother Lord Peake performed quite admirably on the lists, if rumors are true. I wish to test your strength, Ser Theodore. I wish to see if you're worthy of taking the oath that I and my brothers have taken - to become a knight of the kingsguard. Are you willing?"

The rumors be true? Theodore's brother could hardly get rest. Highborn women giggled at a glance of him and young sons desired to be squired by Lord Peake who had brilliantly taken down Lord Tarly in seven bouts and dueled Ser Vikary to ensure his victory in the melee. Theodore had done well enough, but still earned some fame and honors. Now, cause of the tournament, the Peake name was higher than it used to be. Considering the other houses, it was a tad bit surprising to have the potential to join the Kingsguard.
I wouldn't have come if I hadn't desired to see this opportunity through, Lord Commander.
His brother had been adamant in seeing Theodore accept the raven's message. Not since Aegon III had a member of their household served in the Kingsguard. This was a good chance to redeem the name and elevate themselves further, not only in the Reach, but within the royal court. Theodore Peake would motion to a page who brings him his equipment.
I will be ready when you are, Ser Selmy. The chance to serve a higher purpose is certainly a rare opportunity, especially for my family.

Barristan smiled and nodded. The determination to see this through was a good start. He beckoned for Theodore Peake to follow him. They walked down the stairs of the castle, nothing but the echoes of their steps and the howling sea wind around them. When they reached a heavy oak door Ser Barristan stopped and opened it.
The two knights entered the courtyard of Dragonstone. A few knights and regular guards of the royal household were sparring or checking their equipment. All eyes turned to the lord commander and his companion. Barristan smiled at them while passing by, until he reached a squared-off ring. A young squire came forward and helped remove Barristan's white cloak. The older knight turned to Peake.
"We'll be doing some sparring. We'll start with wooden swords and gambeson, but we'll treat like a real duel. Points for lethal or debilitating wounds. Prepare your equipment and enter the ring. We'll stop on my command."
Barristan put on a white gambeson and grabbed a wooden sword.

Theodore followed the Lord Commander into the courtyard, the sight of the older Selmy with the newcomer certainly garnered some views as they watched the pair move for one of the sparring areas. Ser Peake nodded to the Stormlander before turning to his page and squire. Given how Ser Selmy wasn't in his full armor, Peake did the same by putting on an orange gambeson. His squire was put on the duty to making sure his armor was ready for when the sparring ended and if, perhaps when, Ser Selmy wanted a true duel. Emblazoned upon the gambeson was the three black towers of House Peake, representing the once grand castles held by his family.
Taking a wooden sword, Theodore entered the ring and set himself up to prepare for his sparring with the Lord Commander. This was definitely gonna be different than the tournament.
I am ready, Lord Commander.
