"Begin!"
The lord commmander's voice rang out immediately, silencing most of the courtyard as men came over to watch the match. Barristan took a narrow stance, sword raised high, as he slowly moved left and right. His eyes were locked with Peake's, though he did not attack just yet. It was his preferred style - get a feel for the opponent before striking at his weakpoints. Either the enemy was impatient and left himself open with an attack, or he gave Selmy enough time to find an opening.
Barristan did a few fake-outs before launching forward, striking at Peake's throat with a downward swing. He followed up by switching his grip and trying to strike at his opponent's face with the pommel before backing off.

Selmy had skill, Theodore had youth. Still, the experienced tended to outdo the latter, no matter the age. He had the recent experience of a tournament and his upbringing. Selmy had years of it, especially through two major wars now, where one he had slayed the Blackfyre claimant, Maelys the Monstrous, in single combat. This was going to be one hell of a sparring match.
Quickly, Peake leaned his head back, allowing the strike at his neck to just punch in the space where it was intended to be blown. It seemed Selmy anticipated this, given that the next strike was with the pommel of the training sword. Theodore put his weight on his backside, trying to get Barristan to aim lower, but instead, the Stormlander drew back, allowing the Reachman to roll on the ground before rising. Sevens above, thought the knight. Despite his age, Barristan was still as sharp and fierce as the day he was able to draw a blade.
Theodore quickly recovered and then made his own move, charging forward. It didn't matter if the parry was made or a block was delivered. He aimed to get in close in order to strike fast and hard. Too much space could not be given to an experienced knight like the Lord Commander. Best to be in his bubble and face.

Good moves, Barristan thought as the younger Theodore did his best to dodge the incoming blows. There were good instincts at display, but would it be enough to convince the lord commander? Even the quickest rogue could duck and cover the sword of a knight, it did not make him a candidate for the kingsguard. Barristan wanted to see more out of Peake.
His wish was granted almost immediately when his opponent charged at him. Aggressive, straightforward and close-quarters - it was a situation even the most experienced knights wanted to avoid. Getting too close to your opponent on the battlefield made technique less advantageous. Even a levied peasant could defeat an armored at that distant if he knew how to wield a dirk. Yet Selmy had enough experience to not lose his cool.
The lord commander parried Theodore's sword and stepped in close as well. Getting close was not the advantage of either man, after all. Barristan kicked at Theodore's calf, the one that he had put most of his weight on. The older knight hoped to to disrupt Peake's balance long enough to leave himself open to a strike against his back.
