Battle for Nola.
The Samnites had mobilized for battle during the night. Hoping to catch the Romans by surprise but the Roman watch was vigilant and caught them, sounding the alarm. The Romans had only just taken the city themselves and repairing the gates had been impossible. The Samnites crashed through them. The hastedly assembled Romans fought as lions and as more of them were torn from slumber to join the fray and fight for their lives it became apparent that the Samnites wouldn't progress. The street fighting grounded down to a pushing contest and the Samnites knew what to do. They sounded the orderly retreat but they weren't beaten.
Minor Roman victory. The Samnites still besiege the town. Romans suffer 1070 casualties, 50% of which are wounded and will be recovered in a day. The Samnites suffered 1780 deaths.
