SAMWELL TARLY, 'THE SLAYER'
BROTHER OF THE NIGHT'S WATCH
BROTHER OF THE NIGHT'S WATCH
Age: 19 (b. 283 AL)
Marital status: N/A
(in relationship with Gilly the Wildling)
Children: N/A
Core traits:
Heritage: Andal (+1 Cav. command)
Birthsign: The Crone's Lantern (+1 Intelligence)
Bloodline: Noble Blood (+1 personal combat)
Stats:
Samwell Tarly has come a long way since he first turned up at the Wall four years prior. Initially nicknamed 'Ser Piggy' and abused by his fellow recruits as well as the iron-fisted master-at-arms of the Watch, Alliser Thorne, Sam found protection under the wing of Jon Snow, who took pity on him, and soon became one of the best friends of the bastard of Winterfell alongside the likes of Grenn, Pyp(ar) and Satin. Despite still being completely incompetent as a warrior, Lord Commander Mormont and Jon successfully identified & applied his true talents: highly intelligent and literate, Sam proved to be of real use as a steward and tended to the Lord Commander's ravens as an aide. After the fight at the Fist of the First Men, in which the Watch was decimated, he became the first man in millennia to kill an Other...albeit not in some epic duel, but by blindly stabbing at said creature with a dragonglass knife (originally found by Jon's direwolf) when it waylaid him and killed another of his friends, Small Paul. For this feat he earned himself another nickname, 'the Slayer', though many think it as ironic as 'Small' Paul's and do not believe he actually killed a White Walker.
After returning to the Wall, Samwell continued to apply his intelligence to his work, this time for Jon's benefit. It was he who tricked senior brothers Cotter Pyke and Denys Mallister into supporting Jon as the late Jeor Mormont's successor, ensuring his ascendancy to the seat of the Lord Commander over the odious Janos Slynt. Sent to Oldtown to forge a Maester's chain and succeed the ailing Aemon Targaryen in that role for the Watch, on his way to Oldtown Samwell demonstrated his new backbone in a fistfight with the deserter Dareon in Braavos (despite losing and being thrown into a canal), witnessed Aemon's passing and took up the Wildling girl Gilly (whose son, sired by her own father Craster, had been kept by Jon for a swap with Mance Rayder's own) as his lover. Once actually at Oldtown, he met with fellow acolytes & novices Alleras (whose ambiguous mannerisms reminded him of Satin) and 'Lazy' Leo Tyrell (who had been one of his many bullies in childhood). There he survived Euron Greyjoy's siege of the city, became an acolyte himself, and earned his links over the past years.
Having set a new record for completing a Maester's chain, the Slayer now sails back for the Wall to reunite with his old friends, eager to place his new knowledge at the disposal of Lord Commander Snow. He may still be worthless in a fight, newfound courage post-Other slaying or no, but Sam is more keenly aware that his talents do not lie in swordplay than ever and trusts his friend will be able to properly apply his abilities - chiefly his smarts - as he had done before. Little does he know that his abusive father, the formidable ex-Lord Randyll, has also already joined the Watch: a situation likely to turn awkward for the Tarlys, considering how they first parted ways, or else be swept under the rug altogether.
