With unrest increasingly spreading across the city of Rome it appears that there is alot more about to happen. With Metellus surrounded by Saturninus' and Vitulus' agents and gladiators his fate looked grim. Though this was only the start of something bigger to happen, to destroy and root out the conservative faction out of Rome. With the situation escalating entirely Saturninus had to abandon his plans and draw up new ones. He could not just take Metellus captive for otherwise the other conservatives would sure go on the counter offensive. The agents of Vitulus and Saturninus go to look for the other conservatives politicians. They are instructed not to harm the properties of the roman people or populare senators. Agents are also sent to villages just outside the city to stir up the people.

"Halt"
Saturninus ordered to his agents and gladiators who had Metellus and his few guards surrounded.
"Surrender yourself without violence and i will ensure you will have a fair trial."
Saturninus offered, of course he knew Metellus would refuse the offer, but if he could get Metellus to die through some rigged jury it would make him look more legitimate.

"I am an elected Tribune of the Plebs. Harm to me is a death sentence. Stand aside."
Metellus ordered of those that had stepped in his path, clutching his toga to himself defensively. His gladiators had formed a defensive circle about him, pushing through the crowds with brute force. Blood, stone and splinters were flying through the air as Saturninus' cronies had begun a general path of destruction through the city. The majority were pushing against the crowds to escape, but the Tribune's men and similar opportunists had begun accosting the wealthier citizens to attack and rob them. All semblance of order had been lost, the extravagant games forgotten. Metellus simply ignored the pontificating of his counterpart, focused solely on his survival. The Augur was now entirely convinced that Saturninus' madness had surpassed even that of the Gracchi; he spoke as if he were Rome itself. At least he had forced him to show his hand early.
"Cato. Take a message to the Senate. You must break off and get out of here. Tell them everything. If I survive unscathed I shall leave the city."
Gaius Porcius Cato was one of the Tribune's trusted confidantes, a descendent of the famous Censor through his eldest son. The fresh-faced youth gave a stern nod and broke off from Metellus' group to find his own way out of the crowd.
"Fortuna, preserve me." Metellus silently muttered in prayer, hoping desperately that his victory over this traitor would not come at the cost of his own life.

Vitulus, surrounded by his personal bodyguard, make his way through the chaotic crowd to find Saturninus. He's sweating nervously, hand gripping his hidden dagger in case anyone suspicious gets too close. With Metellus showing up and trying to cancel the games, who knows how many hired thugs are in the audience, ready to strike? The Tribune looks around, ever vigilant of his surroundings as he slowly moves forward.
"They won't get me, they won't get me..."
Mumbling under his breath, he can feel a hundred eyes upon him. Are they friend or foe? He cannot be sure, better to be safe than sorry until he has regrouped with Saturninus. He will know what to do, his compatriot always seems to know what to do. Maybe they will find a way out of this madness as well. Vitulus coughed, the air filled with dust, sweat and blood. There was even the hint of smoke, indicating that fires had been lit. He prayed it was but a local shop and not the entire neighborhood.
"Quickly men, find Saturninus!"
Vitulus motioned forwards, still unsure where he was and where to find Saturninus. Things were certainly not going to plan.

Saturninus' men begin to seize a number of lesser senators, stragglers in the forum. However, many citizens and slaves fight back against the perceived actions of a tyrant. The Tribune's goons reveal their weapons and begin to slaughter all those who stand in their path; the forum is fast becoming a full-scale battleground. Most of the more prominent senators are forewarned of the impending violence, and manage to bar their doors to the agents of Saturninus.
Saturninus' missives to the outer villages generate panic and confusion, particularly because much of the land there is owned by the wealthy. Many fear an imminent attack and flee for their lives.

One of the tribune's men finally spots Saturninus, surrounded by bodyguards. Vitulus breathes a sigh of relief at the sight of the man, quickly making his way over through the crowd.
"Saturninus! How are you, my friend? The crowd is going crazy, I doubt we can get control over them at this state. We should move on, gather whatever supporters we can and begin the secession right now."

Things were certainly not going to plan. "Vitulus!"
Saturninus yelled from across the fighting, the entire city had become embroiled into madness. Daggers, fires, and fighting where all to be seen in the city. I think it is too late now, our only option is to go full in now, lest the conservatives send legions to us!
Vitulus could see how Saturninus' men had Metellus and his goons surrounded. "The consuls unless already captured will soon convene the senate where they will want us death, it must be prevented!"Saturninus' forehead was sweating profoundly, he did not want it to be all like this. "I will soon appeal to the people myself that make the demands of the people clear to the senate"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Metellus"
Saturninus said to his hated foe, finally he had him where he wanted him to be, under his booth. "Everywhere you appear there is trouble and violence, you are a bringer of ill-tidings!
Saturninus now contemplated his fate, he could kill him now, but would that be a wise move? No, he could if necessary use him as leverage still. "Tell me, what should i do to you?"

"Nothing. I am a citizen of a free city and a Tribune of the Roman people. I warn you, if you do not let me go, the Senate will declare you Hostus and have you executed. Your name will be struck from our records, your property dissolved, your family disavowed."
Metellus stood defiant, though sweat was pouring down his chest and back, soaking through his toga. He bit back an insult.
"Let me depart, and I shall counsel moderation with the Senate. We cannot have open war in Rome's streets."

"I am afraid we are already at a point of no return Metellus"
Saturninus said bitterly, perhaps now with a hint of regret in his voice. He hated it how everything was forced upon him and it was now too late to stop it all. The damage and harm done would never recover. Saturninus now held the tip of the sword on Metellus' throat.
"Urghh"
In this very moment courage seemed to leave Saturninus, regret and sorrow now being very clear to Metellus. It had all gone too far. He wished he could now simply retire and live in obscurity. But it was all too late for that.

"Then let me appeal to your pragmatism. Regardless of my leanings, I am still a tribune of the plebs and a senator of Rome. To murder me would show the people the face of a tyrant rather than a savior. You would lose them. Do you think making war on Rome is truly in their interests, setting citizen against citizen?"
Metellus swallowed, the tip of cold iron resting on the lump in his throat.
"It is time to stop this, Tribune. For the good of our Republic."

Vitulus looked between Saturninus and Metellus, rubbing his hands together to calm himself. His haggard eyes, ever searching for potential assailants, tried to focus on the two tribunes before him.
"The Senate has wanted us dead for quite some time, Metellus, do not deny it. Like the Gracchi before us, any challenge to the corruption and blatant skirting of the laws conducted by the old order is met with violent suppression."
The pressure of events out of his control was starting to affect the mental wellbeing of Vitulus. The more they pushed, the more the flow of the mighty river that was the people of Rome slipped through their fingers. It was like mortals trying to command the flow of the Tiber itself, only to drown in its depths.
"We cannot let you go, Metellus. We lit a fire and I'm afraid that we must let it burn the pyre to ash before we're done. But we cannot kill you, you are still a tribune of the plebs, like us."

"You are right"
Saturninus was just not ready to cross this threshold. It was easy to kill a barbarian in battle but it was something entirely different to kill a Roman citizen and senator by your own hands. Between the killings, looting and fighting time seemed to stand still. The stench of rampant killing and fires only reminding him of the impending doom that was to set upon Rome.
"My wife and little daughter would not approve."
It seemed trivial at this grand moment of things, but he realized now he would likely never see them again.
"Tribune Vitulus, we can not kill Metellus indeed, for i have not the stomach to stain my hands with murder."
Should he kill Metellus he would be always remembered as a tyrant, should he let him go he could just take full revenge if Metellus was not true to his words.

"Saturninus, we cannot be idle for too long. The enemies of the people will rally soon enough, and unless we're able to capture the magistrates of the Senate, they'll recover and we'll be crushed before long."
Focus was slowly returning to the tribune, as the dust slowly settled around them. Saturninus' words calmed Vitulus, seeing that his friend had not lost his senses.
"We need to rally the people once more before the entire city is lost to anarchy. We must seize the grain warehouses, the horrea, and the public treasury, the Aerarium. Once we have the people on our side, we can march on the Senate or wherever they're hiding and make our demands properly."
Vitulus placed a hand on his dagger, feeling its weight in his belt ground him a little. He had not doubts that he would have to shed Roman blood before this whole ordeal was done.
"For the People, my friend."

"For the Roman people"
Saturninus repeated Vitulus' own words, though deep in his mind perhaps Saturninus had admitted defeat already. The blood of Roman people spent, which was hard to live with.
"You are right my friend, we must send agents to occupy these buildings as fast as possible."
Saturninus came back to his senses, but it was clear he was a changed man. Still, Saturninus knew this was a point of no return and backing off was not an option.
"We shall address the Roman people and make their demand clear to the senate"
Saturninus said, he hoped the people could be won over still.
"Bring Metellus to my Villa, he shall be well treated but of course well guarded. Do not talk to him and if he tries to bribe you i shall always pay the double"
He ordered some of his agents. Saturninus realized this was a risky move, but he deemed it to be the better option over murder.

Metellus seemed to relax somewhat, though the slouching of his shoulders and the exhale of breath suggested relief more than anything else.
"I disavow this course of action. Blood already runs in Rome's streets. I suspect I shall not sway you, but I am duty bound to do so regardless."
Quintus felt powerless. Silently, he prayed that the Consuls would show enough decisiveness and good sense to defend the hills and await the arrival of the legions. Soon, the fires of the mob would go out, but they needed time.
