Some time after the dust settled in Roma, Metellus paid a visit to the house of Fabius Maximus. The Domus Maximi was still being cleaned up, on the outside. Servants were about scrubbing graffiti off its walls, left from the Saturninus supporters who seemed to have targeted the households of various Patrician families. Thankfully, the family of Atellus was safe. So, when Metellus came, he'd find the outside still being cleaned up, but the inside relatively at peace. The Roman was watching as his eldest, Paullus, was being educated by a tutor. A slave came over, informing him of his guest, so he left the room and headed to the lobby area. Metellus, my good friend.Gaius welcomes his colleague before requesting a servant to bring them food and drink. How is your family? Are they well given the recent string of events?Atellus had learned of what Metellus had suffered at the hands at Saturninus. Hopefully, the traitor had not laid a finger on his family.

”Salve Gaius.”
Metellus entered in his toga of office, insisting like many of the nobility to cling to the ancient form of traditional dress even as the more comfortable tunic had entered into fashion. Pius sat down on one of Fabius’ couches to accept the hospitality of his host.
”Unfortunately my sister lost her husband in the violence. I have been busy of late settling his estate and ensuring my nephews are attended to. I am glad to hear that your kin escaped any harm.”
Metellus took a sip of wine.
”Our Republic has not been so fortunate. My private fears are that we shall never recover from the ambitions of Saturninus and his transgression.”

Gaius hears of the loss of family.
Next I visit a temple, I will give offerings that your sister's husband finds his way to the afterlife and rejoins his kin and that good fortune smiles upon your nephews, Metellus. My condolences to your sister and your family.
The Roman offers his sincere apologies for what had transpired against his family. Quietly Atellus drinks from his cup.
We still have to worry about Sertorius. As Pro-Consul, he does have command of legions in the East. But given how volatile situations can get there, I doubt he has left it completely undefended. And there is still the matter of Legio V... are they truly with the Senate or not?
He taps the top of his cup.
What was Saturninus thinking?!
Atellus remarks angrily.
Only a madman does what he did... bringing violence to our beloved city.

Metellus gives a nod of thanks, drinking in turn before changing the subject.
”We should perhaps ensure they are sent far from Rome and Sertorius. I suspect we shall need to send every loyal legion we have to force Sertorius to disarm.”
The Pro-Consul was supposedly encamped at Brundisium with a legion, an open violation of tradition that they could do little about at the present.
”He cannot linger in southern Italy forever. Sertorius will either come quietly when his command expires, or…”
Or what? Surely no man would be mad enough to march on the city under arms with a single legion.

Gaius considers the options.
We may have to force his hand into surrendering.
Atellus concludes on the matter of Sertorius. He looks at Metellus.
With Saturninus dead, the cause is without its head. Vitulus may have been a confederate in this, but he certainly didn't hold the sway of the people like his colleague did. Our legions won't be willing to fight each other, but perhaps, showing enough force will make Sertorius capitulate.

”It shall be in the hands of the Consuls, no doubt, whether this year or the next.”
Fabius had put his name in the lots for the next election, and had been one of the only men of note who had done so. Metellus smiled slightly.
”With it all but fated to be you in one of the chairs next year, allow me to offer my support. Perhaps you would consider a more formal and lasting political alliance… Once my family has been allowed to mourn, of course.”
Quintus and Caecilia both would mourn the death of Appius Claudius, but convention dictated that no woman of childbearing years should remain unwed for long.

Gaius turns to his colleague after drinking from his cup.
I thank you for your support, Metellus. Without your insight, I would have walked blindly to Rome.
And who knows where they'd be if Metellus hadn't managed an escape.
An alliance? Well, I cannot say no to a respected colleague of the Augurs and the Tribunate.
Hearing the last bit, he suspected where this was going.
Take all the time needed to mourn, Metellus. I am hardly in any rush.

”We shall. If a marriage to my sister would be amenable to you, then I can ensure it is arranged once the mourning period is over and your own affairs are in order.”
As far as he knew, Atellus had a wife already. But what was some provincial woman compared to the daughter of the greatest family in Rome?

But what was some provincial woman compared to the daughter of the greatest family in Rome? Atellus would have to divorce his wife to do so. Junia had been a good spouse, but this was a matter of politics. While her father had been a good landowner, with fertile lands near Pisae, the political connection with Metellus offered greater rewards. It wouldn't take too much legality to divorce Junia and thus be able to remarry. Let us... give this matter two or three weeks to ensure proper ceremony for the mourning period and for me to settle my affairs.Gaius responds to his colleague. To our future. The Roman says as he raises his cup to Metellus.

"Salve Consul"
The tribune greeted Atellus, though privately Decianus does not like him they had common ground on the issue of citizenship.
"I find your latest discussion in the senate about the issue of citizenship to be rather interesting"
Atellus had proposed granting citizenship to the Italian allies overall, something that the tribune himself was supportive off.

Well, given the recent troubles in Sicily, I daresay I want to avoid that again.
Granted, those combatants were slaves, but they were still a force that gathered and disturbed the peace within a stone's throw of Rome.
A grateful populace ensures internal peace.
And that grateful populace would look to Fabius and grant him support. Whereas Sulla and Lepidus had the love of the soldier, Atellus wanted the support of the people to propel his career.
