"We are like-minded then on this issue despite our respectful differences"
Decianus said, recalling the sessions in the senate.
"I fear however that the latest bill we presented to the senate to vote upon will not be enough to satisfy our allies."
That oaf Metellus had watered down their proposals to something that was nothing but a bland decoction. If necessary Decianus would approach Silo again to pressure the hawks in the senate to further open citizenship.

It is a start though, Decianus.
Fabius remarks before chewing on a date.
It will satisfy the military veterans who could have proven far more troublesome if things come to a head. At least, with them satisfied, it gives the Italians the hopes that it will extend further from there. In my views, it is better than nothing happening. I tried my best, but I do understand that this needs to be done step by step.
The Consul concludes before drinking from his cup. He would not betray Metellus. His brother had been rather reserved on the matter so Fabius would dare not press it any further than it could be done.

"I think it will be only a matter of time before the issue will rise again"
The current bill was nothing more than a sham, a watered-down version of what Decianus and Atellus had in mind.
"We might buy time now but in the long term you know that the situation is untenable, it is a shame that not all senators realize this"
If the senate was not going to listen things would turn out for the worse probably. That was their problem then Decianus thought.

Oh I am certain it will rise again, but we may have to do this step by step.
Atellus knew it was best not to upset his brother-in-law, Pius. He was a good ally and sound Roman colleague.
In due time, perhaps, all Italians will be considered Roman. But that may not happen for some time.

A cloaked Naso knocked at the gates of Atellus' house The rebuilt home of the Reguli was a great relief to have once more, situated on the prestigious Palatine Hill. Gaius made sure to have it be situated closer to the top than before. A slave lets Naso in and leads him to a main area where the older Atellus was speaking with his eldest son, Caeso. The Roman turned to see Naso who had walked into his home, one of the allies of his brother-in-law, Metellus, and the late Crassus if his memory served right. Caeso would excuse himself at the sound of something breaking... likely Quintus being the wild child that he was at that age. The household was rather lively with six children in its rooms. Large for any Roman family. Atellus turns his attention to Naso, knowing that they were aware of each other based on the virtue of who their allies were. Naso, welcome. He gestures to an available seat and calls for a servant to bring wine and food. What a situation in the Senate recently... Sulla seems to be the only one with a brain. Cinna, ever eager for glory, has found himself in a hard place though. He has the haste of a child and the brain of a rat. I fear for our five legions under his command. If they are defeated, there is little that we can use in defense of Rome. The Roman pauses for a moment, forgetting a fact. Nothing against your in-law though.

"Ave, Atellus. My brother-in-law is an idiot, plain and simple."
Naso was furious. Cinna had acted rashly and without consulting him or any of his allies and had consequently severely damaged the populareposition in Rome. And now hewas here, doing damage control.
"And his rashness has only empowered Sulla. While I concur that the man has brains, he is also ambitious and ruthless. The more powerful he grows, the weaker the Republic gets."
The Praetor stopped there. He wanted to hear the former Consul's opinion before saying anything else

Atellus drinks from his cup after wine and food was dispensed. The Roman grabs a grape and proceeds to chew on it quietly.
Sulla has been fortunate though, Naso. The gods ensured he was victorious over Pontus. He returned richer than any other Roman. He is ambitious, but ruthless? Hardly. His ally, Lepidus and their dog, Decianus, are the ruthless kind with promoting violence in the streets and forgetting the traditions of our Republic.
Be what was said, Sulla did respect the Senate and tradition. That was plainly obvious.
Still, there needs to be a balance to the power. And that balance is not in good shape now.

"Sulla will respect the Mos Maiorum and the Republic until it serves him no longer. His legions can easily turn on Rome, Atellus. They follow him, not the Senate nor the People."
Naso was surprised at the words coming out of his mouth. Maybe he did have a conservative side after all.
"There needs to be a balance to the power, indeed. But moreover, there needs to be a unified leadership. Bickering only makes us look weak and the Italians know it." Naso paused for a second. "I believe there's a man worthy of being bestowed that kind of sole leadership."
The Praetor paused once again, looked at Atellus' eyes, enjoying the dramatic pause.
"Metellus Pius Helveticus is held in high regard by the Senate and I believe that if the three of us join forces, we can push the necessary legislation to grant him that command through the Assemblies as well."

Atellus pauses in chewing on a grape when Naso mentions 'sole leadership'. Then slowly, resumes after a moment. What the Roman was speaking of was a dictator, if he was understanding correctly. There hadn't been a dictator of Rome for over a century now. In fact, one of the ancestors of Metellus Pius had been one of those men. Naso was proposing an alliance between the three of them that would see a new form of leadership. Given the times, Atellus was surprised that Sulla hadn't already sought after it.
Sullan legions number many. Highly skilled and veteran... it is easy for anyone to be wary of him.
The older Roman remarked as he grabbed a fistful of grapes, but did not eat them this time.
I suspect you have already spoken with my good brother, otherwise you wouldn't have come. What has Metellus said about your proposal?

Naso was mesmerized by Atellus playing with the grapes and spoke slowly
"Not only Sulla but Lepidus as well. The Republic must be vigilant of men who command such large numbers."
The Praetor snapped out of it with the last question
"I have. He is willing if a bit lethargic. His only two conditions were that it'd be you who brings the bill to the Senate floor and that Decianus and his mobs not be an obstacle. I'm dealing with the first condition now, whereas the second has already been dealt with by Metellus."

I will agree to this.Gaius remarks as he looks at Naso. I will aid my good brother in becoming the sole leader of Rome to ensure that this war is concluded.
