So it looked like Edric was to remain in the capital with the Queen Arianne and Nymeria Martell. He wondered what his role would be on the Small Council. Nonetheless, the young man could feel Dawn itching to fight. For now, he would obey the King's command and remain to assist in defending the capital and ruling the Targaryen claimant.

While many outriders report nothing, the outriders that headed for Harrenhal reported a strong force of light cavalry that blocked their advance north. They bore the banner of Stannis Baratheon. There was no estimation of where the pretender king was for no camp was spotted near the God's Eye.

Harry Strickland, in full armor, marches into the tent of Aegon. They had barely gotten underway and suddenly halted just around Stokeworth. Why had they stopped?! His boys wanted blood, their blades desired combat, and his men weren't good at sitting around.
My King!
The Captain-General bellows.
What is going on?! We have barely begun to march and now I am being given orders to halt and defend?!
His men were already grumbling at this sudden change in orders.

"Scouts have reported an enemy army within Maidenpool, and our northern route is strongly held, though we are unsure how strongly. I would wait for Tarly to cover us from the west before we advance. I am sure you would agree it would not be wise to potentially place ourselves between Maidenpool and more foes." Aegon said coolly.

Strongly held? I heard that our outriders were pushed by light cavalry.
Strickland says, raising an eyebrow.
That is hardly a strong force. Stannis Baratheon is still in the Vale for all we know. He could be scouting a route through the Riverlands with those outriders.
The Captain-General clarifies, remembering what the meetings had said.
If we bottle up here much longer, the soldiers will get anxious, Sire. Their blades have not tasted flesh and blood for some time.

"For all we know Stannis Baratheon is across the next bend in the road, Captain. Tarly will arrive soon, and when he does, we will advance in good order. The Reachmen will compose our western flank, the Golden Company our eastern, to march upon Maidenpool and offer battle. The Dornishmen will proceed to the fords and then to Harrenhall." Aegon replied in a tone that brokered no argument. "I will not sally forth recklessly into some ambush as our recent allies did in the Kingswood."

An action by Baratheon Outriders is spotted by a patrol. The deception did not do its job, however, in accordance with the strategy by Stannis Baratheon. As a result, Aegon's commanders still surmise that Baratheon may be in the area, but others believe his troops are still in the Vale and that these actions are trying to distract them. As Aegon has not found Baratheon's host, he is relatively in the dark. If Baratheon's host cannot be found, the position of the Targaryen loyalists could turn backwards.

There was little choice. Their King was in a comma and the Dornish had been defeated. Randyll Tarly, the Lord Hand, was nowhere to be seen and his army was unaccounted for. Strickland's death, combined with the state of the King, demoralized what remained of the royal army immensely. The dawn of the next day revealed that the sellswords, that augmented their troops, had begun to desert. Acting Captain-General Gorys did his best to stem the desertions, but it was no use. Eventually, he too gave up on preventing the rats fleeing from a sinking ship.
Two days after the battle at Sow's Horn, the Essosi commands the Golden Company to withdraw for King's Landing. There was little to be done about desertions, but they could at least make a stand with the walls of King's Landing as a bulwark against the victorious Stannis Baratheon and his allies.
