Lord Morrigen rode forth with a force of one hundred men. He hoped it would be enough to assault Moat Cailin from the north. He knew it was not a position easily defended from the north, and it was never intended to be. His squire was with him, but Ser Richard was still convalescing. If he hadn't been so concerned with leading the van he might have been in the fight long enough to matter. He laughed to himself. As the storms subsided, the North was almost picturesque. The snow drifts had mostly buried the corpses and the further south they rode, the less the landscape was touched by war.

Moat Cailin was held by one of Bolton's swords, a knight named Ser Rogar. A recent snowfall had covered the land around Moat Cailin, ensuring that the decaying corpses of Ironborn men were frozen and still for all to see. The night before, some survivors of the Battle in the Ice had arrived, giving word of Bolton's defeat and news of Stannis marching on Winterfell. Despite this, Rogar had little desire to surrender, though the small garrison at the ruined castle was opposite of that. The news had shaken their morale and the common soldier was more than willing to surrender just to go home. The guard upon the wall had not noticed the approach of Morrigen's troops as Rogar kept his scouts behind the wall. After all, they had no more than fifty men and could not rely upon the prospect of reinforcements.

Lord Lester Morrigen rode forth towards Moat Cailin under his own banner, that of Stannis King, and a peace banner. It was an offer for the commander of the garrison to treat with him. He stayed out of bowshot, and a party of ten knights was at hand to charge to his defense if things became violent.

Ser Rogar noticed the banners approaching and bellowed for the gates to remain shut... but the garrison seemed to have other ideas. From where Rogar was seen, several men came up and tackled him from behind, shouts were heard from the various men as they rushed over, but none seemed to be helping Ser Rogar up. With the sworn sword of House Bolton tied up, the garrison opened the gates and surrendered without a fight. All they wanted to do was go home.

Lord Morrigen perceived the struggle from within the gates and gave the signal for the rest of the company to form up. "Be wary, men, it may be a ruse. Await my orders!" The party advanced cautiously, careful to avoid the pitfalls, lion-lizards, or other hazards of the terrain. At length, Morrigen addressed the garrison.
"Lord Bolton is dead" He said matter of factly. "King Stannis, the First of his Name, (all other attendant titles) has taken Winterfell and the Lords of the North flock to his banner. He is the true King of Westeros. Surrender to me now and your lives will be spared. Resist, and you will receive the King's justice." A coy smile spread across his patrician features. "Swear your loyalty to Stannis now, and ride beneath my banner, and you will be spared and fed."

One of the garrison steps forth and shouts from the wall.
We do not care who is ruler in the North! We just want to return to our homes and our hearths!
From among the garrison's ranks, more joined his call. It seemed they were tired of staying in Moat Cailin and being ordered about. Likely some were pressed into Bolton's service against their will in order for him to ensure his tyranny over the Northmen.

"Very well, come forth and forfeit your weapons. Register your name, vocation, and home. Those who do not wish to fight may return to their homes unfed. Those who wish to remain in King Stannis' forces will be given a meal." Lester replied. "And bring me that knight you have strung up."

The garrison exits Moat Cailin, tosses their weapons to the ground outside of the gates. Majority of them decide to leave while really only two seemed willing to remain and get a meal. Among things deposited at the garrison's gates was Ser Rogar, who had been left there unceremoniously. A few of them even spat on his person as they left for Rogar had been unwilling to surrender while the garrison was tired. Those that did not join Stannis' army passed by Morrigen's formation and went in various directions.
Upon Lester's investigation, he would find the ruined castle remote and vacated. Only a maester and some servants, belonging to Ser Rogar, remained.

Those who left willingly were left unmolested. Lester left men men in garrison of Moat Cailin and returned to Winterfell with the rest of his strength and prisoners.
