Known to his followers as ‘The King who bears the Sword’ Daemon Blackfyre is the eldest of the Great Bastards of Aegon IV, and he descends from royalty on both sides, being the eldest surviving male descendant of Aegon III through his mother Daena. To many, he appears as a figure that has stepped straight out of legend; a formidable warrior, the model of chivalry, and the handsome resemblance of the Conqueror himself. That he was granted the sword of kings by his father has only added to this potent aura of magnetic charisma. The mere fact of his existence has presented a problem for the regime from the very moment that the Unworthy King played his final, spiteful trick on his legitimate son. Daemon became a natural rallying point for the disaffected, and whether these were his intentions or not, the seeds of rebellion were planted. No doubt these seeds were nurtured by the efforts of others, chief among them Aegor Rivers, another of the Great Bastards. The old rumour has spread that Daeron is a bastard himself, a misbegotten son of the Dragonknight rather than the true-born king. Others spoke of the newly found influence of the Dornish at court, formerly bitter enemies of the kingdom for untold generations, now enjoying the patronage of the crown - and even a chance to wear it, with the crown prince half a Dornishman himself. Resentment has stewed at the so called 'dishonourable peace' and that Daeron had won in the marriage bed that which his namesake had won on the battlefield. Daemon has proven to be a rallying point for every man with a grievance or grudge, every opportunist that wished better for himself, every man that looks upon the pot-bellied King Daeron and wished for a warrior to sit the Iron Throne in his stead.
After years of this simmering resentment, the royal court could apparently ignore the threat Daemon posed no longer. Whether he intended to raise his banner or not, a potent enough faction had crystallised around the greatest of the Unworthy King's bastards that rebellion had become a very real possibility. Whatever his own feelings were, these were no longer important when the orders for his arrest were given, and the word 'treason' spoken. When Ser Quentyn Ball arrived a few hours shy of the Kingsguard that held his warrant, the Black Dragon's mind was made up. He would ride into the Dornish Marches and name himself the rightful King, gathering the disaffected to him. Thousands would swear their oaths of fealty, the first among them Aegor Rivers, who placed a crown upon his brother's head with his own hands. The news travelled from Dorne to the Wall, and more flock to join the Black Dragon each day, leaving the keeps of their fathers to ride into the Marches or turning the colours of the royal banner that flies above their castles.
The Blackfyre Rebellion has begun.
