After the court had settled on the island, Ser Barristan Selmy seeks a private audience with King Rhaegar. Ser Barristan finds the King in his chambers, nose deep in what remains of a copy of Septon Barth's Unnatural History. Many of the pages have been torn or blackened by fire, but a good portion of the book survives. Rhaegar scarcely notices Selmy enter, having become used to the Kingsguard coming and going on a whim; one of the white shadows was with the King at all hours of the day, even as he slept.

Some time after the court's move to Dragonstone, the King summons Tywin Lannister to speak with him. Grand Admiral Chesser Lord Lannister makes his way into the meeting room. It had been a hellish past couple weeks, while the King had been occupied with feeding the masses and organizing camps for the survivors, it had fallen to Tywin to re-establish the workings of a functional court. His thinning hair has been cut short and he wears a dark red doublet with the golden pin of office attached near the collar. Sweat beaded his brow and signs of sleep deprivation were just starting to rim his eyes. "You wished to speak your grace."

Rhaegar waits in the Stone Drum, gazing out the window of a chamber near the tower’s summit, out towards the northern sea. As always on Dragonstone, the air reeked of smoke and salt spray.
”Lord Tywin.” The King turned as Tywin entered, his hands clasped together before him. ”I wish to speak with you of your son, and if it is still your wish for him to leave the Kingsguard.”

"Your Grace."He spoke softly, not wishing to disturb his liege's attention too much. The lord commander paused beside the king, looking over his shoulder to see what had caught Rhaegar's interest. "Anything in particular that has caught your Grace's attention? I remember Grand Maester Pycelle once dismissing that book as mere nonsense - a 'stain upon Septon Barth's otherwise impeccable record', if I remember correctly. One would hope that a Hand of the King during the time of dragons would have some insight into the creatures."

One would hope that a Hand of the King during the time of dragons would have some insight into the creatures." "Barth believed that the first Valyrians birthed Dragons from fire and blood." Rhaegar looked up from the page to give Barristan a solemn nod. "Something that my ancestors have failed to mimic time and again."He folded the page over and closed the ragged tome. It was a great shame that Blessed Baelor had destroyed the works of Barth; who knew how much knowledge had been lost in the burning of those pages. Knowledge that might have saved them from later follies."A woman in Red has come to Dragonstone, preaching to any who will listen that Azor Ahai will be born from salt and smoke to wake dragons from stone. I had not read Barth since I was a boy, but the reports stirred my memory."
Aerys had spent a king's ransom procuring the last remaining near-complete copy of Barth's work for his twelfth name-day. Once that had been a happy memory.
"I wonder if we will ever see dragons come again." Rhaegar seemed resigned. "They say that they still take to the skies in the lands beyond the shadow. If I were not King, I should have liked to sail to Asshai and see them for myself."

I wonder if they would be as big and mighty as the Black Dread, or as small and sickly as the last dragon of the Dragonbane?"It was hard to not have learned some lore on the dragons of House Targaryen at the court of Aerys II. The dragons had seemingly grown smaller and weaker with every generation after Aegon's conquest, their extinction more than a hundred years ago. To Barristan, it was a sign that the age of dragons was, and perhaps should be, a thing of the past. "These red priests I find concerning. There have been sightings of them as far as Oldtown, if the sailors are to be believed. For them to arrive so soon after your father's demise, the destruction of King's Landing, and their talk of fire and dragons... I find it hard to believe to all be just a coincidence. Not that I ever saw one of these red-robed preachers at court, though."It could just as easily be the dramatic end of King Aerys and the burning of the capital that drew these fire priests to the Seven Kingdoms. It was too early to tell, and too early to tell if they were a threat or not. Nevertheless, Barristan did not like it.

It must be the hand of fate at work.”There was talk of change from west to east; perhaps the end was truly near. There was little wonder that so many of his predecessors had attempted to revive the dragons, for the power they held was dearly missed. It was hard not to view the present days as more than a sad echo of the glorious years of the Dragon kings. Even the royal blades had been lost, and now they had not even a dragon egg left to boast of.“Perhaps the dragons will yet return. Change is in the air. We can only hold on to the rudder and wait out the storm as best we can.”With dragons, they could have crushed the rebellion with but a thought. How many lives would have been saved if he had Balerion, or even one of the lesser dragons? Rhaegar smiled grimly at the thought.

"Perhaps they are, but one can never truly know their fate. The histories seem to be filled with lords and commoners hoping to control fate and falling. I find it better to trust my sword arm here and now."Barristan found conversations with thinkers and maesters to be interesting. However, so too was small talk with the smith or the butcher or the farmer about their daily work. "Speaking of, your Grace, I was hoping to find the seventh member of your kingsguard. We've been focused on other efforts so it's understandable, however news have reached me from the Reach of a tourney at Highgarden. The brother of Lord Peake seemed to have performed admirably on the lists. Perhaps an able knight from the Reach would be a good addition to the book?"

He had anticipated this conversation, knowing that his son's position in the Kingsguard was a topic of concern for Rhaegar. With a slight nod, he replied, "Your Grace, it has always been my wish for Jaime to leave the Kingsguard and assume his responsibilities as the heir to Casterly Rock."
He took a step closer, his gaze locked with the King's. "Jaime is a capable warrior and a skilled leader. His talents are wasted as a sworn shield, and the Lannister name would benefit greatly from his presence. I believe it is in the best interest of the realm for him to return to his rightful place."

Barristan's question seemed to pull the King out from his wistful reverie.
"Peake, you say? A fine notion. We cannot have the White Cloaks short of numbers."
The Kingsguard were largely ceremonial, but for the noble families it was a great honour for one to wear the White.
"I give you leave to summon this Peake in my name so that he may be assessed." Rhaegar waits in the Stone Drum, gazing out the window of a chamber near the tower’s summit, out towards the northern sea. As always on Dragonstone, the air reeked of smoke and salt spray. ”Lord Tywin.” The King turned as Tywin entered, his hands clasped together before him. ”I wish to speak with you of your son, and if it is still your wish for him to leave the Kingsguard.”Tywin's expression remained impassive as he met the King's gaze. "Perhaps so." Rhaegar nodded, his gaze appearing enigmatic. "Oaths are not so easily voided, but it can be done. I will not pretend my Father offered the cloak as an honour to you."
That the Lannisters held little regard for the honour of the Kingsguard did not appear to trouble him so greatly. "I hear your daughter is still unwed." He ventured carefully. "If you hear out my own mind for the match, then I shall arrange to have your son's oath voided." There was surely some antiquated charge he could use to dismiss Jaime; there would be some law, somewhere.

Tywin Lannister's eyes narrowed slightly at the mention of his daughter. He had considered the possibility of a strategic marriage for her, but knew the importance of choosing the right match. However, if it meant securing Jaime's release from the Kingsguard, he was willing to entertain the idea.
Maintaining his composed demeanor he replied, "Your Grace, my daughter's marriage is a matter of great importance to House Lannister. I would be honored to hear your thoughts on a potential match for her."
Tywin paused for a moment, collecting his thoughts. "However, I must stress that any potential suitor would be worthy of my daughter's hand and capable of upholding the responsibilities that come with such a marriage" Tywin continued. "Cersei is a woman of exceptional beauty, intelligence, and ambition. She deserves a husband who can match her in all aspects." Tywin studied Rhaegar's expression carefully, trying to gauge his intentions. He had always been cautious when it came to the affairs of his family, and would not make any hasty decisions without ensuring the best possible outcome for House Lannister.

"Lord Lonmouth would be my suggestion. He is a knight of proven renown. I intend for my brother to squire for him when he is of age."Though a minor knight from the marches by birth, Lonmouth seemed to command the confidence and absolute trust of the King. A trust that was well earned. A marriage to Cersei would see him join the ranks of the higher nobility beyond question.
