Frey banners arrived at the bridge over the blue fork, a dozen variants of the blue crossing dappled on grey fluttering above a party of steel-clad men on horseback. Change was afoot at the Twins, many said. How long Old Walder was to live was not certain.
A procession of wagons had followed them south, at least a hundred peasants and labourers trailing in the wake of the men on horseback. They brought timber from the Wolfswood and quarried stone from the Vale. Oldstones loomed overhead, the ancient stronghold of the Mudd Kings. Soon they would get to work. Ser Stevron decreed that the ruins should be toppled, and it was his will that would be done.
So they went about their business, stone by stone. More men trickled down from the Twins under Frey banners each day. The old ruin would come down, and a new castle would rise in its place, wrought from good stone and fresh timber. Freystone would stand guardian over this bridge over the Blue Fork; the beginning of their domination over the Trident.
