Riverrun is the ancestral castle of House Tully, the Lords Paramount of the Trident. It is situated in the western Riverlands, at the confluence of two rivers. The castle sits along the river road, an easy ride which links Lannisport and the crossroads. Riverrun is a strong three-sided castle, although not especially large. Riverrun is bordered on the north by the Tumblestone and on the south by the Red Fork, while on the west a third side faces a massive man-made ditch. The castle has red sandstone walls which rise sheer from the water, its battlements are crenelated and have arrow loops, and its towers command the opposite shores. Riverrun's keep is located inside. Properly garrisoned, Riverrun can hold supplies for men and horses for as long as two years. The castle's doors are made of heavy redwood.

Ser Stevron Frey arrives with an escort of armoured knights, emblazoned with the twin castles of House Frey. They request an audience with the Lord Tully. Old Frey's firstborn son is welcomed to Riverrun. A household knight escorted him up the wall walk to where Hoster Tully could be found. The red-haired lord watched his bannermen assemble on the field outside the castle in contemplative silence. With a quick glance towards the Frey, he turned back to watch the army grow. "I welcome you to Riverrun, Ser Stevron. Are you here to join our ranks in your venerable father's stead? I do not see your banners approaching."Hoster took a step back from the merlons and turned towards Stevron Frey. He gave the older knight an expectant look.

Stevron was a weaselly looking man with mousey brown hair that had began to grey around the temples. He greeted Lord Hoster with a deep bow from the waist, having removed his helmet upon entrance; the steel bascinet was tucked neatly under his arm.
"Forgive me coming so armed, my lord. The roads are not as safe as they once were." No pack of bandits would be foolish enough to attack a convoy of armoured knights. A polite smile twitched about the corners of his lips.
"Your pardon. My Lord Father gathers our banners as we speak, my Lord. A great injustice, what happened to Lord Stark and his son. A great injustice indeed." Stevron cleared his throat, perhaps unwilling to come out and state that they would be marching on the King himself outright. Treason was no easy thing to stomach.
Stevron offered a sideways glance to the men assembling before Riverrun's sluice gates. "I suspect many wish to know whether we will merely defend our borders or march..."

"Sadly these are unsafe times. We must do what is necessary to ensure the safety of those we have sworn to protect."
Despite his general ambivalence towards the Freys, Stevron's was not wrong. The War of the Ninepenny Kings was the last major war that the Seven Kingdoms had seen, and the ensuing peace was something that few wanted to abandon. Hoster included.
"It was beyond injustice, Ser Stevron. It was gruesome torture and murder, I could scarcely believe my ears when I learned of it. If the King is allowed use such methods against his sworn bannermen, how can any man be safe the royal wrath? How can we uphold our oaths if the King violates his own?"
They had all witnessed the gradual decline of King Aerys byt chosen to ignore it. No longer. Ned Stark had become family which meant something important.
"We are the Riverlands, battlefield of Westeros. Whether we like it or not, the war will come marching over our fields and towns. To defend our borders, we must act without hesitation. The North and the Vale stand with us. I hope House Frey will uphold its own oaths."

”House Frey does not forget its oaths, my lord.” Stevron replied firmly, nodding along to Hoster agreeably.”Tell us the battlefield, and we shall ride for you.”
A moment passed in silence.
“My Lord Father sent me to deliver not only this news but his best regards and well wishes upon the news of your daughter’s marriages, my lord. A mighty boon, to wed two houses so noble and stories as Arryn and Stark. My lord has humbly asked whether you have reconsidered his offer to join our houses. House Frey has many fine women, and my lord father would be most honoured by such a match.”
Stevron delivered the message fluently and dutifully; it was well practiced, but a touch optimistic. Lord Frey had ever desired to see one of his daughters or granddaughters wed to the widowed Hoster, and had broached the subject several times since he became once more available for marriage.

"Then I would be honored if you'd join me when we march, Ser Stevron. The men of the Crossing will be a boon for this host."
Hoster smiled honestly and started to walk along the battlements, inviting Stevron to join him.
"Give my regards to your father when you next meet. My daughters are lucky indeed to wed such honorable lords. Though I am loathe to give away my daughters, I could not be happier."
Something suddenly changed in Hoster's demeanor. His eyes glazed over, his thoughts far away. How many years had it been since the Stranger came for his beloved Minisa? It still felt like yesterday he held wept over her lifeless body. He knew his duty... but no. It was too much to ask. He shook himself awake and smiled at Stevron Frey.
"Excuse me... Lord Walder is a considerate man and I'm honored by his offer. When I feel the time is right to remarry, House Frey will be first to be considered. Not at this time, I'm afraid."

Stevron merely answered with a nod and a bow. It was the same answer Lord Hoster had given every time before, and if the Frey was disappointed by this did not show.
”I will give my regards and your answer, my lord. I shall be honoured to soon march at your side.”
And with that, the son and heir of old Lord Walder left as quickly as he had come, riding back out of the sluice gate and around the gathering host of Rivermen that would surely soon march upon the King himself.

Lord Stark arriving with his household knights and black Walder arrived at Riverrun ahead of his army which followed close by. Ned came to marry Cat, in a fast and sober ceremony so he could move off to war as soon as humanly possible. His sister was his top priority. Nonetheless some kindness to lord Tully had to be presented.
"Lord Tully, I came to honor my pledge to wed your daughter, the honorable lady Catelyn." Eddard said with the charactarising northern honor.

Hoster Tully met with the young Stark in the great hall of Riverrun. Attending were his closest retainers and household knights, Maester Kym, Septon Osmynd, and steward Utherydes Wayn. Catelyn and Lysa were also there, attended to by a septa. Cat seemed nervous as she watched her husband-to-be; though considered a woman by the laws of gods and men, to her father she was still barely a girl. He had been protective of his daughters since his wife's passing and worked tirelessly to find suitable husbands for them. Brandon Stark had been promising - though brash and wild like all northmen, his name and blood carried much weight. The aging Lord of Riverrun looked over Ned Stark. A boy of 19 summers, he looked like a younger Brandon. However, there was a different spirit to the boy wolf - more courteous, not as wild. Considering Brandon's ill fate, Hoster thought it perhaps better traits given the circumstances. If they all survived the rebellion, hopefully he would prove a good and dutiful husband to his Cat. Hoster nodded and welcomed the delegation. "Welcome, Lord Stark. I wish Riverrun could provide you both with a more lavish ceremony and wedding feast, but given the times I fear it will have to make due. If you follow me..."The Tullys and Starks went outside to Riverrun's garden, kept pristine since the late Lady Minisa's passing, to the godswood. At the center stood a great weirwood tree, its characteristic carved face somberly watching them all. Its crimson leaves rustled in the quiet wind. Hoster turned to Ned Stark. "I know House Stark follow the Old Gods, but House Tully are faithful to the Seven. To honor both faiths, we'll hold the ceremony in front of this weirwood tree, while Septon Osmynd presides over the ceremony. Is this acceptable to Lord Stark?"

Lord Stark, with a solemn expression, met Hoster Tully's gaze. He respected the traditions and faiths of the houses he encountered, understanding the importance of unity in the face of a rebellion. Ned nodded respectfully.
"Lord Tully, I appreciate your consideration. It is indeed acceptable to hold the ceremony in front of this ancient weirwood, while Septon Osmynd officiates. The gods are present in many forms, and it is fitting that we honor both the Old Gods and the Seven on this occasion. Our Houses may have different faiths, but our alliance and the cause we fight for transcend religious differences."
He turned to Catelyn, his eyes filled with warmth and determination. "My lady, our love and commitment to each other will be fortified by this union, in the eyes of gods and men alike. No matter the challenges we face, we shall face them together, with honor and strength."
Ned took a step closer to the weirwood, its ancient branches seeming to embrace the sky. He extended his hand toward Catelyn, his eyes fixed on hers. "Catelyn Tully, will you do me the great honor of becoming my wife? To stand by my side through the battles to come, to share in joy and sorrow, and to build a future together?"
Catelyn's nervousness gave way to a radiant smile as she reached out, her hand finding its place in Ned's. "I will, Eddard Stark. With all my heart and soul, I take you as my husband, to be loyal and true, in times of peace and times of war, until the end of our days."
Septon Osmynd stepped forward, holding out his hands and beginning the ceremony that would bind their fates together. The words of marriage echoed through the godswood, blending the Old Gods and the Seven into a solemn vow of unity.
As the ceremony reached its conclusion, a sense of purpose and duty settled upon the gathering. The godswood seemed to hold its breath, as if witnessing a turning point in the realm's history. Lord Stark and Lady Stark exchanged vows and sealed their bond with a shared kiss, solidifying the alliance between House Stark and House Tully.
As they turned to face their families and supporters, Eddard Stark couldn't help but feel a surge of hope amidst the turbulent times. He held Catelyn's hand tightly, his eyes shining with determination.
"May the gods bless our union and guide us through the darkness ahead. Together, we shall face whatever comes and fight for justice, honor, and the future we believe in."
And with that, the war council and wedding ceremony at Riverrun became a pivotal moment in the unfolding rebellion, where love and duty intertwined amidst the chaos of war.

A missive arrives at Riverrun, borne on horseback from the south, sealed with the Red Dragon. Within, Lord Hoster is commanded to lay down his arms, disband his banners, and surrender personally to Prince Rhaegar. If he returns to the King's Peace, he will be pardoned for his crimes, the conditions of which are contingent on the submission of a hostage as a token of goodwill.

Stannis arrives to Riverrun alongside a score of retainers, including his cousin Estermont and his newest knight, Davos Seaworth. Stannis and his companions is welcomed at the gates before being led to the godswood of Riverrun. There they are met by Lord Hoster himself, and his daughter Lysa. A servant brings out some refreshments of fruits and wine for them. "Welcome to Riverrun, Lord Stannis. I hope your journey was amicable. I appreciate you coming this far."He motioned to his daughter. Lysa, this is Stannis Baratheon, the new Lord of Storm's End and the younger brother of Robert Baratheon.Lysa curtsied politely but did not say much. Her auburn hair marks her as a Tully, though her blue eyes have a pale tint unlike the rest of her family.
