Roland Westerling was surprised by the Sea Snake's suggestion, despite the fair logic behind it. However, there were other concerns that made the idea less than desirable.
"I would have to agree with Lord Caron on this, my Lord Hand. As the granddaughter of the late King Aegon, the Queen's claim must be considered on this matter. There's also the matter of Princess Baela's... exploits, during the war. Her dragon brought down King Aegon and Sunfyre over Dragonstone. I fear voices of discontent would be raised by those who owed their allegiances to the late king if the princess were to be named heir."
More than voices would no doubt be raised, the Lord Chamberlain thought. Lord Velaryon, as the elder statesman with direct ties to House Targaryen, was now in a position to put his blood on the Iron Throne. Despite his age, the old Sea Snake still had his ambitions.
"The King and Queen are still young, too young to bear children yet. With so few of Targaryen blood left, I frankly see no need to settle upon an official heir just yet. Who else outside those in the Red Keep could claim the Iron Throne?"

"No offense taken, he is to be lord, but no more"
Replied Corlys to the aged Rowan. Only he was certain of Alyn's parentage, and none would he partake on such secret. Rhaenyra herself claimed the matter settled, Laenor's baseborn son. And such he would remain. But they could no longer afford a man of dubious ancestry on the throne.
"The Queen is of feeble mind, surely shaken by the death of her siblings"
Said Corlys, dismissive.
"She could not mount the throne on her own. The princesses could, more than anyone"
Also, she was Aegon's rotten child; let him drown on his own blood, deep down in the Seventh Hell where now he sat, in eternal anguish.
"Baela and Rhaena are the king's only siblings, they're thrice of the dragon blood. If we're to account those of female descent, they're the most senior heirs of Aegon the Conqueror. Both descend from the first and the second son of King Jaehaerys; none can claim as much, the blood of Valyria runs thick in their veins"
Added the regent.
"However, if the council does not settle on the matter, so be it. I pray none shall fight over this in a few years hence. From the king's loins shall sprout a strong tree like none other, his union shall bear fruit of Green and Black and the war debts will be settled on a grandson of King Aegon and Queen Rhaenyra both"

Royce closes his eyes, rubbing his bearded chin slightly. The once dark hair was now grey and white.
Still though... the matter of succession will loom among the minds of many.
Lord Caron contemplates a bit further before addressing the Lord Hand and the other Regents.
Right now, there are four Targaryens. Two of which married to mend the broken lines of Viserys, yet two remain unmarried and are of marriageable age. It will be half a decade before the King and Queen will be able to sire a child after all. It would be wise to find Rhaena and Baela suitable spouses to help with rebuilding the Targaryen household. Establishing alliances and bonds that His Grace can call upon and look to for support. The Crown will need such ties to aid in the rebuilding of the Seven Kingdoms and fortifying the coming reign of His Grace.
Marriage was the basis of everything after all. There were no more adult Targaryens, no wise elder to lead the household. These two half-sisters of the King could bring in allies that had lands, wealth, troops, and influence to help in rebuilding the Crown's prestige, image, and power.
Perhaps one should marry a Black loyalist and another a Green supporter. Further mending the rift that divided our realm for two bloody years.
Perhaps second sons of strong reputations, able minds, and so forth that have no prospects of a good future, but could still link Aegon to their families through marriage. The offer of a princess would bring these individuals to court, along with their ties, to enhance the Iron Throne's capabilities, which were limited as of now.

”We must do away with this talk of Blacks and Greens, unless we want the realm to bleed again.”
Thaddeus slammed a hand down onto the table.
”But finding fitting husbands of noble birth for the princesses is a fine idea, for if the unthinkable should happen then it shall be upon them to father male heirs to His Grace.”
