Fire and Blood. Words that became all too real on the preceding years of 131 AC.
Aemond losing his eye as a child. Rhaenyra's son, Lucerys, was killed by Prince Aemond and his mighty dragon, Vhagar, over the Shipbreaker Bay. A pair of rats offing the head of the Usurper’s heir, Jaehaerys. The ripping apart of Targaryens such as Daeron the Daring and Maelor Targaryen… these are just a number of occurrences that broke the back of House Targaryen as sword and dragon fell upon each other and their allies. A land once united was divided between whether they followed the Greens or the Blacks. Unity that had been strong during the reigns of Aegon the Conqueror, Jaehaerys the Old, and Viserys broke simply because there two who desired the throne and they would not back down so easily.
The Greens and Blacks, the Usurper versus the Realm’s Delight, tore the Seven Kingdoms asunder as a fierce civil war wracked the realm for two years. Legends of both the family and their dragons alike fell and were burned away. This was the beginning of the end for the Dragons that had given so much power to the House Targaryen since the coming of the Conqueror and the Conquest of the Seven Kingdoms. The lands would be scarred and ravaged by both sides and their mounts. Betrayal was common and death was to be easily expected. And yet, what truly ended the viciousness of the era was when Ser Belgrave of the Kingsguard opened the litter, carrying his liege, and found the fatigued and scarred Aegon, the Second of His Name, dead with blood upon his lips. What came next was a flurry of activity.
After the Wolf descended upon the capital, ensuring the death of traitors and villains that remained. Although he was a Usurper, Aegon II's death by poison was still a great crime. Some were just spared by the Wolf's teeth by either decree or pleas. In the end, a crown was placed on the only head left to continue the House of Dragons. Aegon, the Third of His Name, son of Rhaenyra and her last husband, Daemon Targaryen. And so, the Regency would begin over a wounded and ravaged kingdom. But the embers of ambition have not cooled yet. For with the dragon wounded, others may seek to hold power over the Iron Throne and it’s melancholy boy-king.
