Your character's abilities are divided into three base stats. Strength, charisma, and intelligence. How well they perform certain actions and in certain situations is based on these stats. For instance, a character with high strength will do better in personal combat whereas a character with high intelligence will be a better politician. Adult characters have five points to put into these stats as they wish upon sign up or when they come of age (16 years old), with a base maximum of 5 points put into any stat on sign up (excluding birthsigns, bloodlines, etc)
Resilience - governs actions that involve physical ability, such as personal combat. For female characters, this includes childbirth.
Charisma - governs actions that involve persuasion, such as diplomacy.
Intelligence - governs actions that involve a more logical approach. Schemes, plots, political movements.
Authority - governs actions pertaining to the battlefield, such as how effective you are as a strategist and tactician. Also affects how likely your vassals will follow you to war and obey your commands.
These points can be spent as you wish, and there are benefits and drawbacks to having both balanced characters and characters that are entirely ‘specialised’ into one or two points categories.
Choose a heritage, birthsign, and profession.
Core Trait:
A ‘core trait’ is chosen by the player upon character sign up to best reflect the personality of their character. These are mainly for flavour, and for players to ensure their character personality is locked in from the start. You can have up to two core traits.
Moralistic: You hold yourself to a code of honour or justice that wins the respect of your peers but blunts you as a political force.
Ruthless: There is nothing you would not do to advance your position at the expense of your enemies. You are feared for this, but also regarded with disdain by those with a moral code.
Idealist: You put faith in the code of chivalry, the customs of your ancestors, and the justice of Gods and Men. You are admired for your optimism but also seen as naive.
Cynic: You put little faith in the Gods or the system. You see yourself as merely realistic, but you are viewed by others as sour or even blasphemous.
Zealot: You believe wholeheartedly in the Gods and a divine plan. Nothing can shake your conviction, with even disasters being nothing but a divine test. You are viewed as a fanatic by those with less firm convictions.
Bold: You are brave, one to follow into battle. You make decisions based on impulse or instinct and have little regard for the potential consequences. Whilst you are adept at taking advantage of an opportunity, you are equally likely to rush headlong into a trap or disrupt a well planned strategy.
Cautious: You lead from the rear. You are adept at planning long term strategies, conserving your resources for the opportune moment. Some may call you a coward and a ditherer, and the over-cautious often miss golden opportunities.
Proud: You are proud of yourself and your lineage. People will look to you for leadership. Sometimes this borders on arrogance, and pride comes before a fall.
Humble: You do not shout loudly about your achievements, preferring to go unnoticed. Whilst your achievements are not always recognised, it means you are often not a target for envious political enemies.
Heritage:
Lowborn: You were born to a family of muck-swilling, swineherding, bowl o' brown eating common folk, and spent your youth owning little more than the shirt on your back. You are looked down upon by the nobles for your lack of airs and graces, but you survived through the Long Night the hard way, without the safety of steel or castle walls. You are as tough as old boots. +1 resilience, +1 intelligence.
Highborn Bastard: Bottom of the noble-born ladder, you at least had the good fortune of your mother's family name or your father's good nature sparing you a life on the streets. Spat out by the highborn world, bastards are usually ambitious and vindictive as a result - the bastards conceived during the hard times of winter even more so. Very little is handed to you, unlike your trueborn kin, and so you have become accustomed to taking it for yourself. +1 charisma, +1 resilience.
Noble-Born: A son or daughter of one of the noble houses, you were raised by a good family behind thick castle walls, and you were fortunate enough to survive winter as a result. Despite the impertinence of the peasantry, the aristocracy still take their rightful place as the lords and masters of the land, with you among them. You have been raised since birth to lead your people in war and peace. +1 authority.
Blue Blooded: You are a son or daughter of one of the greatest houses of the realm, with a bloodline that can be traced back to the ancient kings that ruled before the dragons came. You look down on your social inferiors with a deserved arrogance reserved only for those families that command seas of coin and legions of men. Even in this new world, the great houses are still worthy of respect, and you intend to ensure that it remains so. +1 authority, +1 charisma.
Dragon Blooded: You are the blood of Old Valyria, descended in the male line from Aegon Targaryen himself. An aura of mystique surrounds the royal house, so much so that they are considered to be above mere mortals by the population at large. +1 authority, +1 charisma, +1 point to any stat.
Birthsign:
The Crone’s Lantern: Born under the Crone’s Lantern, you are marked as a bearer of wisdom and knowledge. +1 Intelligence.
The Galley: Born under the Galley, you are marked as a child of the sea, and a born sailor. +1 to Naval Battles, +10% movement speed when commanding a navy.
The Ice Dragon: Born under the Ice Dragon, a mythical creature of immense strength. You are blessed by its good portents. +1 Resilience.
The King’s Crown: Born under the sign of royalty, you are marked with an authoritative and commanding presence. +1 Authority.
The Shadowcat: Born under the sign of the Shadowcat, you are marked by portents of deception and death. +1 to Spying and Assassination efforts
The Stallion: Born under the sign of the Stallion, you are blessed with swiftness and surety in war. Grants an extra army movement hex, +1 to battle rolls when commanding cavalry, +1 to tournament rolls.
The Moonmaid: You are born under the sign of the Moonmaid. You are blessed with a good heart and fair manner. +1 Charisma.
Profession:
Cleric: You serve none but the Gods, and your skills as a preacher carry their message to the masses. You are likely an adept public speaker, able to hold a crowd in rapt attention. You are also likely to be able to read and write, which is no small skill in these troubled times. +1 authority, +1 intelligence.
Warrior: You are a sworn sword, either in the service of a noble or the Gods. You make your fortune either in real warfare or the tournaments of the noble born. +1 resilience, +2 tournament rolls.
Nobleman: You are a landowner, a Lord, a leader of men. You were raised from birth to take your place at the pinnacle of society, and your forte is the high politicking of your peers and the art of war. +1 authority, +1 charisma.
Social Pariah: You are a social outlier; a woman that wields a sword, for example, or one that roams the land peddling ointments and petty sorcery. Deviating from the established order takes a certain strength of character, as well as surviving the consequences. -1 charisma, +1 resilience, +1 intelligence
Matriarch: You are the matriarch of the household; a mother, wife, or even a widow. While war is the province of men, women have no less of a decisive role in noble life, and their efforts to ensure the household run smoothly often go unnoticed. They are formidable in their own right, and are responsible for rearing the next generation of nobility. +1 resilience, +1 charisma.
