Quintus Fabius Maximus, accompanied by a commission of several priests and other Roman dignitaries, rides into the lands of the Etruscan league looking for parley with the representatives of Rome's northern neighbour.

The city of Caere, or Cisra as the Caeretānī call it, is the most friendly to Roma of all the Etruscan polities; as such, naturally, Fabius Maximus and the fetiales proceed towards Caere. Many of the other Etruscan powers have various treaties with Roma, mostly expiring within or just over ten years from now. Caere, specifically, has a treaty lasting for another fifteen years, and the Caeretani have upheld the peace faithfully.
The Caerites welcome in the Roman mission as one does with old friends, and, within the day, are brought before the Caeretani aristocracy, a senate-like assembly of magistrates. A leader of the Etruscan nobles speaks to Fabius as he enters and after the proper etiquette is followed.
"Romans are welcome in Cisra; we see you bring your affects of office, and the fetiales accompany you. What business do you bring from the people of Ruma?"

"I come bearing an offer of friendship from the Republic to those who have already proven thus."
Greeted the haughty Fabius, who was clad in the panoply of a warrior to indicate his Imperium beyond the limits of his city.
"You are a faithful people, and we have no doubt the current arrangement will persist long into the future. But others around you are not so faithful, and I know the day will come when Gallic raiders descend from the north across the mountains to raid our fair country once again."

"This is true, although we believe your treaties with Tarchna and Clevsin have some years left?"
(Tarquinii and Clusium)
The Caerite leader waved a hand, his braided Tuscan curls shaking a little in the summer breeze that entered the curia from a large window.
"Are you asking for help in further shoring up our northern borders? We too fear the return of the barbarians, and so too do those rivals of ours that hold no love for Ruma."

"Indeed. Our current eyes are looking southwards, and though we have the men to defend our northern border we would prefer to be forewarned of any such aggression by our stalwart friends to our north."

(I'm so far behind on this. I'll just spoil it, the Caeritani are happy to present the issue of maintaining peace treaties with Rome when it meets the other Etruscan cities at their yearly councils; Fabius is successful.)
