Likewise, the upcoming censor decided to bring his would-be colleague a visit to discuss politics.

Perhaps surprisingly, the young Plebeian Gracchus comes to pay a visit to the renowned ex-consul and dictator.

He is welcomed in and directed toward an open patio area where Valerius is sitting, enjoying a glass of wine. Upon his visitor being announced, the aged statesman stands to greet his fellow senator. "Ave, welcome to my home."
His visit finds Valerius breaking his fast; munching on a tray of meat and bread. As their eyes meet, a warm smile passes over his face. "To what honor do I play host to such venerable company?"
The young Grachii is led upstairs to an open balcony where Valerius stands, leaning against a railing. His gaze looking out over the sprawling lands of his estate. "Such pleasant days, and yet such dark times ahead. Reminds me of the last war."

Gracchus admired the sheer size and grandiosity of the Corvan estate. It was a bold choice to live outside the confines of the city, but it highlighted both the eccentricity and sheer reputation of Marcus Valerius Corvus, perhaps the pre-eminent man of Rome for the last twenty years. And he had not even yet reached fifty.
”I was not old enough to fight. But my father spoke highly of you, that much I can remember.”
Said Tiberius as he joined the ex-Consul on the balcony. Old Gaius Gracchus had been an equestrian under the command of Corvus during the first Samnite and Latin War.
”Many will no doubt wish that you were out there again, and be less certain of victory for your absence.”

"You look much like your father did in his youth. So full of energy, seeking an outlet to release it."
As memories of younger, more violent days flashed in the back of Corvus's mind, a grim smile crossed his face. Reach a hand up to stroking his well groomed beard; an oddity among his countrymen, but one that served to make him look more distinguished, he continued. "I'm not yet an old man, but Mors finds all men eventually. It is for the best of the republic that younger men have the opportunity to be quenched in battle, to learn the hard lessons that your father and I experienced. For it is in battle, when your blood is up, that weak men falter and strong men prosper." To know the sting of defeat and relish in the sweet taste of victory. "And, if they prove lacking, a more experienced hand can always come forward to guide the way." And be appreciated even more in doing so.

"Ave, Valerius, and thank you. Good tidings on your house." Lucius made a slight bow of respect to the elder statesman as was customary. "I'm sure you've heard already, but the Samnites are on the warpath again. One would think they'd have the good sense to stay quiet after their last thrashing."

Gracchus smiled and blushed at the compliment, but let it pass without comment.
”True enough. I believe that an experienced hand to hold the reins in Roma while the Consuls give the Samnites our steel is just as important.”
Still, Tiberius would have to complete his mandatory military service at some point. All men in the Republic were bound to fight for her at some stage or other.
”If only your colleague was just as even minded.”

"Salve, noble Valerius"Camillus greeted his soon to be counterpart with a warm smile. He had always thought good about the Valerians. "I hope i do not disturb you so early in the morning"He said, he himself still sleepy. Election days were always long and tiresome. "It seems that we are about to be colleagues very soon. I offer you my friendship and good cooperation."Camillus said, hopefully able to deduct Valerius' political positions from this conversation.

"Aye, and they will suffer greatly for their transgressions. We were too generous in our last peace deal with them."
And many a good roman had paid their lifeblood to bring that peace. It stung Valerius to his core to see it broken so soon after.
"Once we crush them in the field, we should not make the same mistake again."
"I can see why you would dislike him." Valerius gave a low chuckle
"He is a strong willed man who knows what he wants. The same ways I used to seek to control a battlefield, he does the same with the senate floor."
The elder senator in question was a bit of a quandary; unapologetic, ambitious, self-serving, but also a loyal son of the republic.
"I am interested to see what ambitions you have for the senate. Valerius gave a dry smile.
"With war on the horizons, at least one of the consuls will have to muster the armies in the field. With many others taking up positions of command." A chance to prove themselves, and if successful gain enough prestige to last the rest of their career.
"That leaves the door open for new ideas to be introduced... or old ones to be reaffirmed."
Maintaining the vision their forefathers had set, with the needs of a growing republic was quite the balancing act indeed.

"I'm glad that we are of one mind on this issue. It is the issue of the Samnites that has brought me to your home." Mugillanus nodded in approval before continuing. "As always, the elections are soon upon us and I am standing for consulship this year. As any good Roman I understand the necessity of dealing with our foes swiftly and decisively. Your support, noble Valerius, would be most appreciated." ------ After the elections, Plebeian Tribune Lucius Livius finds himself outside the home of the paterfamilias of the Valerii.

"With the consuls in the field i seek to safeguard our republic from upstarts and firebrands who attempt to undo the very foundation of it."Censor Camillus explained his position. Camillus was truly concerned that if he let slip control of politics into the hands of the populists that they would transform the republic in some decadent form of Athenian democracy. "But now is not the time to provoke tensions by attempting to repeal legislation that is beneficial to the plebeians. What i want is stability now, we don't need controversial new legislation to be passed.Even though the censor wanted to repeal some of the hard fought rights that the plebeians had won he knew that now was not the time right for it. "Hmm, you have a son around, i believe. Is he married already?"
The censor Camillus inquired.

"He worries me in pursuing a polarising course in these times of strife."
Confessed Gracchus.
"I would rest easier knowing that his more eccentric policies would be limited by the guiding hand of a man who has the respect of all, Patrician and Plebe alike."
