Fabius Maximus was a mousy haired man in his late thirties with an easy smile and eyes of bright hazel. Naturally as the head of one of Roma’s first families he lived within a sprawling manse on the Palatine - erected on prime land acquired after the unfortunate sack of the city some half a century prior. Like Rome itself, the Fabians had seemingly recovered from this setback quite well.
”Brother Lucius.”
Greeted Quintus, with a crooked grin and a firm embrace. A swarm of slaves hovered around the guest, seeing to every need and comfort as the party was led through the atrium and deeper into the interior.
”Please, sit.”
Fabius placed himself down on a reclining couch, a comfort brought in from neighbouring Etruria. He looked towards Papirius with a glint of expectation.

"Salve, brother Quintus. Good tidings upon your house."
Mugillanus gratefully accepted the invitation and took a seat a couch opposite of his brother-in-law.
"You're doing well for yourself, I see. Many a man would covet a house atop the Palatine. Yet from what I hear, brother dear, you're not seeking the consulship this year?"
He gave Fabius an inquisitive look.
"I will be honest with you, I'm quite surprised. Few families can match the Fabia in influence, even the Junia and the Furia would have to be careful. So why not seek the highest office, Quintus?"

"You yourself stood for the office this year. I could not put myself as your rival."
Quintus answered respectfully, supping on a cup of wine.
"I am content to seek office next year, truth be told. I shall content myself once again with the Praetorship. If the Samnites are as doughty and tough as my father often said, we shall have need of all the men of Imperium the republic can offer, and all the warriors it can muster."
The Praetorship was no small prize, and it was one he could walk into unopposed. Fabius grinned.
"In the meantime I offer you my full support, as always. May your term be auspicious and victorious."

Mugillanus nodded his thanks and raised his cup in a toast.
"Thank you, it is good to know that you can always count on your family. So what do you plan to do? Will you join the army or do you plan to stay here in Rome? It would be good to count on your support during the campaign south."

"I plan to be the next year's Praetor, which shall undoubtedly come with its own command."
Replied Fabius smoothly. It had been overlooked this year in favour of the Consulship, apparently, by those who smelt glory in the air.
"Of course I pray that the war effort goes smoothly for your sake. Perhaps I shall never be needed in the field."
Maximus gave a little chuckle.
"If I am not needed, perhaps my son can serve you as Tribune. He is as green as grass, so some blood on his sword will do him good."

"Send your son to me once I've been confirmed as consul, and I'll make sure he'll see some action on the battlefield."
A favor for a favor, such was the game of Rome.
