Mugillanus is quickly escorted by a slave who leads him through the large villa to the garden. When passing the main hall he could see the many masks of Lucius' forefathers. Many of them had been consuls, even dictators.
"Salve Mugillanus, i was just inspecting the newly arrived statue of my great-grandfather, Marcus Camillus.
All knew Marcus Camillus as Rome's "second founder", the man who liberated Rome from Brennus' barbarian horde and conquered Veii. Lucius was evidently very proud of the fact he descended from him.
"But please be seated, one of my slaves will fetch wine and prepare a meal for us to enjoy. Please talk freely"
The former consul said, who had turned fifty a few weeks ago. Though his body was now aging and his head was now bold he was still known in Roman politics to be sharp of mind.

Fabius Maximus is quickly welcomed into the large villa of Camillus by a slave. The slave would then escort Fabius through many halls, where many masks of Camillus' forefathers were displayed, to the garden where Lucius and his children were about to enjoy a banquet.
"Salve, be welcome, and take yourself a seat next to me, there is enough food so take whatever you want."
Lucius Furius Camillus said, the statue of Marcus Furius Camillus, Rome's "second founcer" towering over the banquet table.
"I believe you have met my children before"
The aging Camillus said whose head had turned bald, but like his great-grandfather, he wore a beard. An untraditional standard. The children respectfully nodded to their guest, the Furians had of course always thought greatly of the patrician Fabians.

"Salve, noble Camillus. Good tidings to your house, and may the gods be ever merciful to you and yours." The younger senator followed his host's lead and sat down as well, gratefully accepting a goblet of wine from a servant. It was certainly a hot day, and it had been a long walk across the city to the Aventine. "Straight o business, then? I will not mince words, I seek your favor for the upcoming elections. With the loathsome Samnites on the warpath, we need warriors to bring Rome to victory. I have that experience to bring us victory. No half-measures or empty speeches, just war until our enemy is defeated." He leaned back a little in his seat, looking up at the statue of Rome's second founder. "Your boy is also named Marcus Camillus, is he not? Has he had the opportunity to serve Rome on the battlefield, yet? No doubt a military tribune serving directly under the consul would be good for his character and his career, no?"

Fabius did not even pay the statue a second glance, instead smiling lazily as a slave piled up a plate of food for his own pleasure. "Perhaps I have. They have the nobility of their father and, may I say, the beauty of their mother."Quintus answered politely, paying the children a cursory nod of feigned recognition as he chewed away on a slice of fruit. Fabius had children of his own, little devils that they were. Well, larger devils now, as all three were on the cusp of adulthood."Honoured as ever am I, noble Camillus, to be a guest at your fine home."
He said this through several mouthfuls of food."I find myself in need of counsel." He explained, half through gesticulation. "I am in need of a bride, now that my mourning period for my dear departed wife is over. I must look to the future, or so the auspices say." Fabius had consulted the Augurs who had told him as much, after a nice donation.

"A practical man i see"Camillus remarked as they sat in the garden on a bench, enjoying the good weather. "It is true that our republic needs good military men, given that the Samnites are rising their ugly heads again."Camillus sipped from his wine, recalling memories from the latin war that he fought in. "Truthfully, i was planning to throw my hat in for the consulship once again. But ultimately i did not because Rome needs to safeguarded from rabble-rousers and upstarts who have not good morals to sit in our August assembly."Camillus was known to be one of the most ardent conservative men in the world of politics. He hated the plebeians with every bone of his body. "I will support your bid for consulship if you support my policy to keep these upstart plebeians in check and uproot them from our August assembly"He smiled once again, his hatred for the plebeians was pretty well known. "And yes, i would love to see my good son serve under a consul with the right pedigree"

"I see"Old Camillus said he chewed on a large chunck of chicken. The offer came at a good time as his children were not getting any younger. And the Fabians were of course of good patrician stock. "I think my eldest daughter is looking for a good husband. Are you not?"He looked opposite him, where the eldest of Camillus' daughter sits. She was a quiet, slender but thoughtful lady. She merely raised her shoulders, avoiding the question."It would be a natural marriage to say between our families i think."

Mugillanus smiled and sat up from his couch.
"A favor for a favor, what could be more fair? I will make sure my clients in the senate and the assemblies support your agenda while I'm away from Rome."
Truth be told, Mugillanus was among the more moderate patricians when it came to the question of growing plebeian influence in Rome. However, a deal was a deal and he was smart enough to not go back on his word with Furius Camillus.

The head of the household said from the bench, the sun began to set down by now. Camillus started to develop a headache from the wine, age made the effects of alcohol worse it was told him. "Well then, when the senate has given you imperium over our legions my son shall be send to serve you."Camillus said, nearly falling asleep, clearly the alcohol was taking its part.

"An excellent proposal, my good friend."Fabius seemed delighted with the match. Not that Furius' daughter was any great beauty; she was comely enough to be sure, but a man could find a whore for that. There was something much more valuable in a marriage than simple gratification."Naturally, I already have children of my own, but I shall not protest such a fine and virtuous bride. Every Roman man needs a wife."Fabius Maximus seemed now to pretend that the whole thing had been a favour from himself to Furius, and that the whole thing was entirely the old man's idea.

"That is so when you are a good young man like you, i however at my age it may be too old to remarry now"
It had been only a few years ago that his wife had passed. And with the years increasing he decided that he was too old to remarry.
"Maybe in a few years when the threats to our republic are diminished i might enter a priesthood to serve my final years to the gods."
The thought of serving the gods had sprung up ever since the death of his wife. But there was still so much to do.
"I am sure that my dear daughter Furia will be a good wife. I shall make arrangements to hold the marriage in the traditional way we used to do"
Furia stared to her husband to be, certainly she was not a very talkative person, whatever thoughts she has remained deep in her head.
