After jostling with the Samnites for control over the fertile plains Campania some two decades earlier, with the wealthy Capua being the greatest prize won by the Romans into their growing hegemony. This conquest, along with the absorption of the Latin League following their failed uprising, has left Rome among the dominant regional powers of central Italia. In the peace-filled years since, the nascent Roman Republic has slowly been expanding her influence down the coast, building colonies and settlements that infringe on Samnite territory, and setting her allies on Samnite tributaries. This latent tension has now come to a head, with the Samnite aligned city of Neapolis attacking the Roman colony of Fregellae that had been established in violation of previous treaties. Naturally, Roma has responded, and in turn the Samnites have marched to assist their allies. The old rivals jostle for control of central Italia once again.
We play as Roman senators, both Plebeian and Patrician, with the old aristocracy recently being rivalled by a new class of wealthy Plebeian nobiles that have come to compete for the highest office in the republic.
