THE BLACKFYRE REBELLION: 196 AC
Daemon Blackfyre, legitimised bastard son of the late King Aegon IV and Daena Targaryen, has raised his standard of rebellion and claims the Iron Throne as his by right. He has denounced Good King Daeron as a bastard born from an illegal union between the Queen and her younger brother, and with the help of Bittersteel and Quentyn Ball intends to unseat his ostensible brother and make himself King.
Whether due to discontent with Daeron's Dornish-friendly rule or genuine belief in Daemon’s claim, many major lords of the realm have declared for the Black Dragon. Westeros is once again at war, and many hedge their bets on who shall emerge the victor.
DRAMATIS PERSONAE:
KING DAERON II:
Good King Daeron is the eldest legitimate son of Aegon IV, and succeeded him upon his death despite their bitter personal disagreements, not the least being Aegon himself promoting rumours of his son’s bastardy after the most volatile of their rows. Daeron is generally thought of as a wise and thoughtful king, and can be credited with the peaceful inclusion of Dorne into the Seven Kingdoms through the marriage of his sister to his good-brother, the Prince of Dorne. Daeron wed Myriah Martell in 170 AC, and they have sired four healthy sons.
However, this decision has proven unpopular with many. Some, mainly the former partisans of Aegon the Unworthy’s corrupt regime, regard the influence the Dornish hold over the court to be poisoning the mind of the king, and enviously watch as both royal marriages and positions of power are given to outsiders that have long been their mortal enemies. They see Daeron as weak for this capitulation, and this only hits home the truth that the King is no warrior. His bastard half-brother, however, is certainly a warrior, and the singers say he bears a personal grudge for losing his love Daenerys to the Prince of Dorne. Others whisper that the King is a bastard himself, though the last man to claim such ate his words at the point of Dark Sister.
DAEMON BLACKFYRE:
Known to his followers as ‘The King who bears the Sword’ Daemon is the eldest of the Great Bastards of Aegon IV, and he descends from royalty on both sides, being the eldest surviving male descendant of Aegon III through his mother Daena. This in itself provides a potent enough claim to the throne, let alone the fact that his father bestowed upon him Blackfyre, the hereditary sword of Kings, as a nameday present. Throw in rumours as to his elder brother’s supposed bastardy and Daemon emerges as a very powerful claimant to the Iron Throne.
Truth be told, Daemon’s claims are based almost entirely on his strength of character - the eldest Great Bastard is a born warrior and general, the very image of the Targaryen warrior-kings of old that brought Westeros to heel. To many, he serves as a throwback to the days when the men that ruled them were strong men who ruled by the sword rather than pot bellied, soft spoken scholars that govern through compromise and negotiation. Those that hanker for the ‘Good Old Days’, whatever those may be, flock in droves to the banner of this would-be usurper. Supported by his younger half brother Bittersteel and Ser Quentin Ball, Daemon has among his ranks the finest warriors of the age.
