White Sword Tower White Sword Tower is one of the towers of the Red Keep in King's Landing. It contains the chambers of the Kingsguard. The Kingsguard, also known poetically as the White Swords or White Cloaks, are the royal bodyguards of the Iron Throne. Regarded as the finest knights in the Seven Kingdoms, they are sworn to protect their king and the royal family with their own lives, to obey his commands, and to keep his secrets. The Kingsguard are sworn for life and are forbidden from owning land, taking a wife, or fathering children, although they can hold non-hereditary commands, such as being warden or Hand of the King. Traditionally the Kingsguard consists of seven permanent members, after the Andal traditions and the Faith of the Seven. Two female ruling monarchs, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (129–130 AC) and the claimant Queen Daenerys Targaryen (300 AC-Present), have operated with a Queensguard instead of a Kingsguard. Ser Addam prowled his new quarters in a White Sword Tower that was empty and bereft of life with only a few sworn brothers haven taken the vows and the white cloak. They were little more than shadows, a few white wraiths standing vigil. There was not even a Lord Commander, so the younger Osgrey took it upon himself one sleepless night to fill the White Book with the deeds of sworn brothers past and present. Many had been captured or lost; only Tyrell and Kettleblack definitely remained alive from Tommen’s Kingsguard. Not that the news came as any blessing. The Kingslayer was lost or dead in the Riverands, and Ser Addam mused that it might be better if he stayed that way - a cripple could not defend the King, especially not one who has sullied his honour so easily by slaying one king and cuckolding another. Ser Addam could not help but feel that the order had somehow been diminished, with the days of great champions like Ser Arthur Dayne and Barristan the Bold long since gone. Instead, the King was protected by sellswords and blacksmith’s sons, with the likes of Rolly Duckfield, who was less noble than the most baseborn stable-boy, now deemed worthy enough to wear the white. Though he had pride in being among the first named, it felt hollow, as if he and his brothers were somehow not worthy of the honour. It left a bitter taste in his mouth, and an eagerness to prove his valour by his skill at arms. It was an urge to be taken out in the courtyard on the morrow.

Set Parmen the Purple arrives at the tower, takes his oath, and the first sentence of his entry in the white book is filled.

Ser Richard Horpe is named Lord Commander of the Kingsguard after a short ceremony in the White Sword Tower; Ser Horpe is now entitled to take his seat on the King’s Small Council and discuss matters relevant to the realm’s governance.
