Magistrates, 97 BCE:
Consuls: Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius and Gnaeus Cornelius Lentulus (NPC, Optimate)
Censor: Lucius Licinius Crassus Capitolinus and Gaius Fabius Maximus Atellus
Praetors: Gaius Appuleius Decianus and Publius Cornelius Scipio Nasica.
Aediles: Gaius Julius Caesar and Lucius Cornelius Cinna
Plebeian Tribunes: Quintus Sertorius and Marcus Livius Drusus
Quaestors: Publius Cornelius Sulla, Lucius Ovidius Naso, Lucius Menenius Lanatus, Lucius Atilius Regulus Barbatus
Provincial Governors:
Asia: Lucius Cornelius Sulla (until mid 97 BC)
Africa: NPC
Macedonia: NPC
Cappadocia: Lucius Cornelius Sulla (until mid 97 BC)
Corsica Et Sardinia: NPC
Cilicia: NPC
Hispania Ulterior: NPC
Hispania Citerior: NPC
Gallia Cisalpina: NPC
Gallia Transalpina: NPC
Sicilia:NPC
Crete: Lucius Valerius Flaccus
EVENTS:
- Manius Papirius Mugillanus is still a target for prosecution, though due to inactivity the furore against him has died down somewhat.
- The Italians are beginning to hope that the two tribunes Marcus Livius Drusus and Quintus Sertorius will deliver upon their promised legislation for Italic citizenship.
- King Ptolemy Apion of Cyrenaica has died without an heir, and willed his entire kingdom to the Roman Republic. As the wealthy kingdom falls into anarchy, it must be decided whether the Republic will accept this bequest and how this land shall be managed.
- The King of Cyprus has sent an emissary to Roma asking for a loan of 150,000 denarii with which to reclaim his kingdom. He also requests the aid that the Romans promised him several years ago during the Mithridatic war.
PROVINCIAL ISSUES:
Crete: Being very much a recent conquest, Roman control over the island is loose at best. As the Publicani predictably land and begin their usual pattern of extortion, cities promised tax exemption now find themselves being fleeced once again by the private tax collectors.
Gaul: The Gauls of the Aedui tribe have asked Lepidus to mediate a dispute between them, the Sequani tribe, and the nearby Arverni. It appears they all are making war on each other over a small border dispute.
Asia/Cappadocia: Many of the cities of Asia are poor and discontented after the recent indemnities imposed by Sulla. Though unable to forment any meaningful rebellion, there are more than a few murmurs of unhappiness among them. The nearby Parthians watch this situation develop with interest.
Agendas:
Optimates:
- Weakening the Tribunate
- Strengthening Senatorial power
- Eliminating the grain dole
- Preventing Italic citizenship
Populares:
- Land reform to benefit poorer urban citizens
- Debt cancellation
- Preserving the grain dole
- Preserving the Tribunate
- Prosecuting Mugillanus
