The dignitaries are led toward the main hall where Lepidus conducted business with nobles from the area. Fruit and watered wine was brought before the nobleman. In the hall several men are posted as a guard. Fierce men. Lepidus his Gladiator detachment had followed him to Gaul. He had them equipped with the best armor and weapons in the Republic. They now formed his personal guard when he had no lictors to hover around him. As the noblemen enter, Boii slaves serve them the wine and fruit before Lepidus meets them and asks them what brings them to Burdigala.

"Noble Pro-Consul."
Began the Aedui delegation, all chieftains of rank.
"We beseech the aid of Rome against our enemies, the Sequani and the Arverni. We ask that your honourable self demands the cession of hostilities before our lands are beset from all sides by our enemies, who are working together to crush us."

Lepidus was surprised so many chieftains could at once call him a noble pro-consul. The need must certainly be dire if they were exchanging such pleasantries. The situation seemed dire, dire enough to call for Rome's aid. However, finding out why these savages attacked Rome's nominal ally was to be a priority. "Rome defends it's ally's but I must ask. Why are they seeking your destruction?" Lepidus promptly aasked as his mind wondered off into the possibilities Lepidus saw in Gaul. The Helvitii had armed against him when he campaigned the Aquitani. Cutting them down would enhance his prestige. He however did know as well that another provocation from his side would anger the senate, perhaps even Sulla so threading lightly was the advice. Snapping back to the moment Lepidus added to his earlier asking "Rome will answer the call you gave her but we must know why they seek to destroy them and how many men you will contribute to the campaign if the savages, out to destroy your home and hearth chose violence over peace." Victory was never about the dice thrown by the gods. Victory belonged to those who prepared and Lepidus was prepared... armed to the teeth.

"They fear our power, noble Pro-Consul. The influence of our tribe is keenly felt by the Arverni, who are on the wane. Thus they have joined forces with our mortal enemies to cut us down to size."
Grumbled the Aedui chief, in a rather passable form of latin.
"We wish only to defend our lands from our enemies, and we know that our enemies fear the influence of Rome."

Lepidus tapped his fingers, thinking. How to spin this? How to spin this.. it raced through his head. He got up from his seat and walked over to the chieftain who spoke the most. Laying his hand on his soldier, producing a faint smile. "Rome shall aid you. I shall dispatch envoys." Perhaps he wouldnt have to spin anything. The Gauls might see their combined power as enough to defy Rome.
----
The pro consul sent envoys. Their message is simple. Cease all hostilities and parley with pro Consul Lepidus.

The Gauls give a blunt refusal, stating that Rome is to stay out of what is an internal Gallic affair. Their feud between the tribes does not involve the Republic, and though they have no wish to begin a war with Rome they shall defend their borders if the notoriously bloodthirsty Lepidus begins encroaching on them.
---
Publius, having travelled this time with the bulk of the army, quickly falls back into the routine of military life. Only this time, he had an official post beyond that given by his commander. As Quaestor, Publius was in charge of overseeing the Pro-Consul's war chest, as well as observing the efforts of the Publicani tax collectors in what was a very new and unstable addition to the Republic. While he did not enjoy the book-keeping side of his duties, the several learned Greeks he had purchased handled the true grunt-work on behalf of their master, while the one-eyed officer busied himself serving at the side of Lepidus, his patron and commanding officer.

Lepidus seeks out young Publius. Marcus had promised aid and the senate gave their blessing. The Legions knew something was coming. Especially when all the exploratores and porcursetores and the likes had returned to Burdigala. It could only mean one thing. Of course rumor had spread the barracks but te hightend activity before a campaign was always noticable. It was in the air, in everyone's guts or some sort. Eventually Marcus was directed to Publius by a slave, Publius was in the company of some fine slave women. Perhaps this is why both men stomached each other so well. Who knew..
"Publius." Lepidus said with heavy tone. As if something bothered him. "Instruct the exploratores and procursetores to begin their scouting ahead." Lepidus commanded, he was proud on the performance of his new enacted system. Though huge succes was not yet accomplished a noticeable difference since that sad even on an Illyrian mountain had not yet occurred anymore. He sighed before adding "I am worried about the enemy lands we need to traverse before we reach allied lands. Perhaps it is best to take the cities on our way there." This was against the primary will of the senate but perhaps his son and Sulla could mend that. Lepidus wished not to bring harm to his man simply because the senate gave unworkable orders.

Publius stood to attention, ditching the slave girl and providing Lepidus with a crisp salute as he gave his own assessment of the situation.
"Such settlements will be difficult to hold without splitting our forces, commander. But such a strategy would draw the Arverni away from the lands of our allies."
Extending the frontier north would be an expensive use of manpower, but there was wisdom at least into turning the Arverni into an allied neighbour.
"I shall dispatch the scouts at once."
