Game of Thrones setup
Great Houses and Power-Players:
House Lannister-Baratheon
- Ruled by the child King Tommen, with the erratic Queen Mother Cersei as regent. There are few other senior figures left in the family, with Jaime having distanced himself and Tyrion being in exile. Kevan is dead, and Cersei suspects Tyrell.
- Holds King’s Landing and the relatively untouched Westerlands.
- Holds tenuous fealty over the Riverlands, Reach and (nominally) the North.
- Dependent on the Reach for soldiers as Lannister forces have largely been spent in the War of the Five Kings (at 50% manpower?). The Riverlands also serves them only grudgingly.
- Lannister's reputation is very poor following the Red Wedding.
- King’s Landing is largely dominated by the Lannister hostile faith militant.
- Believes itself domestically secure, only just aware of the landing of Aegon VI in Storm’s End and the desertion of Dorne to their cause. Little information on the events north of the neck.
- The Crown is completely bankrupt, and the Iron Bank is beginning to get impatient about the debt.
House Tyrell of the Reach
- Largely unspent in the war, commanding the largest military in Westeros.
- Strong connection to the royal house through marriage, and supplies the capital with food. Essentially props up the Lannister regime.
- Lord Mace Tyrell, now Lord Protector, is widely considered to be a bumbling fool. The Tyrells are also not well loved by their vassals.
- Many Reach-lords still hold Targaryen sympathies and may yet rise for a dragon claimant.
- Threatened from the south by an Ironborn invasion. Euron Greyjoy’s fleet (likely with supernatural aid) threatens Oldtown and has already taken the Shield Islands.
- Garlan Tyrell leads a strong force, from Highgarden, to take Brightwater Keep and, likely, reclaim the Shield Islands.
- Only just becoming aware of Aegon VI’s presence.
Aegon VI Targaryen
- Commands the Golden Company, a 10,000 strong force of veteran mercenaries.
- Holds the recently captured Storm’s End, a previously thought impregnable fortress.
- Holds the sword Blackfyre.
- Is concluding a marriage alliance with Dorne, a largely unspent force in the WOTFK.
- Has the advantage of Varys’ spies.
- Did not manage to secure Danaerys or her dragons.
- Lacks the manpower at present to attack the capital head on. Will need to try and tempt Lannister allies to his banner.
House Martell of Dorne
- Unspent force, can still command their full strength. Very defensible home region.
- Have been as Mac puts it ‘playing both sides’ by betrothing to the Lannisters and courting Dany and now Aegon.
- Lannister scheme is threatened with exposure now Myrcella has had her face cleaved by Darkstar.
- Quentyn Martell got fried by a dragon. Ouch.
- Arianna is courting Aegon VI and it looks like Dorne are going into Team Faegon. They have an axe to grind against the Lannisters.
- Unaware of Dany’s recent exploits and Quentyn’s death.
House Frey of the Twins/Riverrun
- Holds the Twins and Riverrun, and is now one of premier houses of the Riverlands.
- Held as pariahs due to the Red Wedding.
- Hated by their fellow Riverlander lords.
- Hunted by Lady Stoneheart and the Brotherhood without Banners
- Dependent on Lannister support to consolidate their gains
House Baelish of Harrenhal/House Arryn of the Vale
- Holds nominal overlordship of the Riverlands, though Harrenhal is ruined, cursed, and almost worthless.
- Holds the regency of the Vale, an unspent force in the WOTFK.
- Dependent on keeping the Vale lords on side - a substantial group of them mistrust Baelish; Royce of Runestone chief among them.
- Robert Arryn is easily malleable but sickly, and may soon die. Harrold Hardyng is his heir.
- Holds Sansa Stark in his keeping as his daughter ‘Alayne Stone’; she has strong ties to the Riverlands and the North.
Stannis Baratheon
- Far from home, with a very depleted force in the dead of winter. Supplies are low.
- Dependent on the northern lords for aid; is attempting to put Rickon Stark on the throne of Winterfell.
- About to fight the Boltons for control of the north, with many northern houses openly or secretly supporting him over the Boltons.
- Dragonstone and Storm’s End both have fallen, and only few troops remain to defend the Stormlands.
- Stannis is not the most popular of fellows. However he has saved the North from a wildling invasion and is the last claimant left with substantial military experience.
- Worships an unpopular god.
- Heir is a disfigured girl.
- Blissfully unaware of the marching host of the dead coming from beyond the wall.
- Has the support of the Iron Bank of Braavos.
Loyalist Northern Lords
- House Mormont, Glover, Umber, the Mountain Clans, Mors Umber, and the Thenns that now hold Karhold all support Stannis.
- Most of their strength perished in the War of the Five Kings, but around a third of the North’s forces still remain intact.
- Arnolf Karstark supports Stannis openly but plots to betray him in the upcoming battle. This betrayal was exposed, and Karstark is imprisoned.
House Bolton
- Supported by House Dustin and the Freys
- Supported reluctantly by other northern lords; Cerwyn, Tallhart, Umber, Hornwood, Manderly, Locke. Manderly plans to betray Bolton in the upcoming battle. The others also have suspect loyalty, with no love for Freys or Bolton.
- Had fake ‘Arya Stark’ aka Jeyne Poole marry Ramsay. She escaped with Theon for Stannis
- Ramsay Bolton and Roose Bolton are not well loved by the northerners
- Though they hold Winterfell, but their supplies are low and their vassals are literally plotting to kill/betray them. They need to defeat Stannis quickly to have any chance of surviving winter
House Greyjoy
- Ruled by batshit crazy King Euron, who probably has some supernatural help to give him the boost he needs to attack the Reach head on. Is about to attack Oldtown to get whatever weird books he needs from the Hightowers.
- Victarion is off in the east with a burned hand and a dragon taming horn. Time to kick ass and ride dragons? Needs to make the horn his own ‘with blood’ before being able to use it.
- Theon/Reek is captured by Stannis, along with Asha. Not good. Northmen hate them both.
- Has the largest fleet in Westeros and a substantial fighting force. Almost certainly have one or two magic tricks up their sleeve. Probably a Kraken.
Night’s Watch
- Very weak.
- Supported by Wildlings, which has boosted their manpower. But still very weak.
- Holds the Wall.
- About to get attacked by a vast host of Others
- Recently murdered their Lord Commander Jon Snow, who will promptly come back to life very soon.
Brotherhood without Banners
- Raiding in the Riverlands and, especially, targeting House Frey and supporters
