León had been the camp of a Roman Legion, the Legio VII Gemina Felix, but it had grown beyond that. The kings of Asturias found a fitting capital in the old town, surrounded by thick and tall Roman walls, stronger than any they could build at that time. And this turned their seat, abandoning Oviedo and the Northern fringes of their kingdom, moving South, to gentler climate and more fertile and plentiful lands. Every king doted the city, like none other in their realm, gracing it with many churches, a castle over one of the city gates and several palaces. Furthermore, Alfonso V granted it a fuero, a letter of privileges, giving its citizens many rights that were unhead of. Later on, the ruling house was replaced by their kin-by-marriage, Fernando I, who had married Bermudo III's sister, Sancha, both being children of Alfonso V. The usurper kept doting his new seat as any of his antecessors, including the erection a magnificent basilica, San Isidoro, built to house the relics of the Visigothic saint and man of letters. On his last will, he left the city of León and its kingdom to his middle son, Alfonso, who ruled as the sixth of his name.
