The castle of Crow's Nest was not as formidable as the mighty keep that defended the mouth of the Slayne, that mighty river which brought wealth to the stormlands. And yet it was still a keep of Andal build, constructed of stone and timber and mason's talent to withstand as many assailants as possible. Its defenders would know this, even as they had been forced to watch for weeks now the army sitting beneath them.
The army had foraged much from the surrounding countryside, and time enough had been given over to the complete and utter investment of the castle. The siege engines, constructed when aggressor and defender had yet to even reach out to the other for parley, had been thought of as just a ploy to encourage swift surrender. However now that time enough had passed, and a decision was needed, those engines were beginning to move.
Ser Donnel Swann, standing beneath a banner of his lord, Tommen Baratheon, raised his sword. He would put the skill of Andal masonry to the test. Donnel knew little of fancy tricks, but he understood the value of tradition. His forefathers sacked cities with these tactics, and he would honour them with another victory.
They would approach from opposite directions, of equal strength and disposition. Mixed infantry would take ladders to the walls under the cover of arrowfire, while the cavalry, dismounted, would wait until the walls were fully committed before coming forward to reinforce where necessary.
