"I shan't tell you, but the story doesn't have a happy ending."
It never did. Something that saddened the Princess greatly.
"He said that it was something Uncle Renly would have thought of."
Shireen knew her father better than any man alive, except perhaps Ser Davos. Uncle Renly used to make him angry, now he only made him quiet, perhaps a little sad. Not much was said of him anymore.

"He said that it was something Uncle Renly would have thought of."Shireen knew her father better than any man alive, except perhaps Ser Davos. Uncle Renly used to make him angry, now he only made him quiet, perhaps a little sad. Not much was said of him anymore. "Hummm... they rarely do, else Cersei would have loved Robert and the realm wouldn't have bled. The saddest stories, do well to remember, usually don't have name attached. It's of all those babes, lasses and lads who have suffered or died because the queen loved her own brother"He added. "The smallfolk, princess, as the nobles call us, are people, just like you and I, with fears, bad bellies, nightmares and dreams and loves and aching joints. You're a princess, yes, but don't forget there're lasses like you who're without a roof, cold and hungry, because men born in castles thought it was fine to cause all this mess"
Davos looked pensive, Shireen was of a good stock, she would make a fine queen. "You better remember that when ya're queen, will ya'?"He pats Shireen's shoulder. "I met Renly, he was good to have around, festive one, unlike your father. He was bright and shiny, but all not so good at the end of the day, he'd made a poor king, but..."Seaworth saw a shadow in his mind, one casted by a man he knew, delivered in the groves below Storm's End. He shivered. "Alas, he died to early and foolishly, he'd havemade a good bannerman for your dad"

"I will. The Dance of Dragons is really not that different to now, is it? Maybe Mushroom is right."
The Dwarf left little good to say about the Kings and Queens and Princesses of the age. It was perhaps not so different now.
"The Red Lady says that there is only one war that matters, and my father has to win this one to fight the true enemy and save the people."
And yet people died every day. It did not give her any comfort to know they died for something they believed in.
"I suppose I am lucky, even with this."
She gingerly touched the blackened, mottled skin where the greyscale had rotted away at her face.

"I've come to learn those high born are despicable and their children are actually worse"Davos didn't comment on Melisandre or her messianic role for Stannis, he instead touched the hardened skin. "Except your father and you. You're fine and better, I know this"He smiled, caressing the blackened cheek. "This is part of you. Just like my shortened fingers and my balding head. You wouldn't be you without it and many aren't bothered by it. I know Devan doesn't mind. Neither me. We don't think less of you for this. And, you're the greatest lass I've ever met, you make me proud, princess"

The Princess blushed and smiled, her large Florent ears glowing hot and red.
"Thank you, Davos. You are a good man, for a smuggler."
She imitates her father's low voice and frowning face with a laugh.

"I guess I could be. But I'm no good, I'm just like any other man"Davos laughs heartily at the imitation. He then looks through the window. "Oh, excuse me princess, I have to meet with you father, I'll call Devan to make you company"Davos raises from the seat. Moments later, he was granted entry by guardsmen and gentleman-of-the-body to Stannis' chambers, while his son stayed with Shireen.

"Lord Davos. Our time in the Vale draws to an end. I feel that we have reached the limit of Lord Baelish's hospitality."
The ghost of a smile passed across the King's face. Stannis knew that Baelish loved him not, but when confronted by Harry Arryn and all his bannermen the man could do little but step aside. He turned to face his Hand.
"We will soon march from the Bloody Gate into the Riverlands and see if Tully is as good as his word. I would have you command the our fleets with the Northmen and hold our ships at Maidenpool when it is open to us."
Word had reached him that some pirate had occupied Dragonstone and was charging tolls on the Narrow Sea. They would have to hold the channel if they were to threaten the capital. The King took a sip from a cup of water.
"I would like to march on the capital and not give this pretender time to warm my seat, but I know that the Northmen and Riverlords have scores to settle with the Freys."

"And we should not remain idle for long"Said the Hand. Seaworth didn't mind either abusing of Lord Baelish's good will, he was a weasely man if he had seen any. "Do you want me to ship Snow and his men to Maidenpool, sire? That will do. If you wish so I could take Dragonstone as well. Maybe Ser Storm will be still in the castle, a prisoner"
The bastard was a brave knight and loyal. "Aye, they want to burn the Twins, with lord Walder inside, more the like"

"Aye, take them to the Riverlands. Let the Wolves have their day, and if they want to march to the Twins then so be it."
The King judged that Snow would be capable enough, surrounded by men like Umber and Ryswell who knew a great deal of the ways of war.
"If you could, then do so. But I would not lose the fleet so easily to this up-jumped Pirate Lord, even if he squats on my lordly seat."
Stannis knew not who it was, and did not care. Once the war was over he would send a fleet to scour the Stepstones and hang every pirate and brigand that made a home on those God-forsaken rocks.
"We will use Harrenhal as our base to meet any threat that comes from the south. When the pretender marches north we will crush him with all our strength."

"I will go with force, if I find the fortress easy enough to take, I will, else I won't risk our sails, my king. I'm rather risk-averse of late, you know as much"Replied Seaworth with a smile on his lips. "He stands no chance, sire. He's a just a lad, you're a man grown and well-seasoned and followed by great lords, three kingdoms at your back. You know I'm no man of flattery, I believe what I say"He added, hand on heart. "But be careful, sire, do not let these lords drag you to petty rivalries and disputes, let them solve their own grievances as long as they serve you, give them empty honors, fancy offices and knighthoods: it's all they care about, they're as vacous as they come. Let them feel important and entitled, they shall be dealt with, properly, when you sit in your throne, sire"

"They ought to have made you king of smugglers, Lord Davos. You would have ruled them well."
Stannis knew that few cared about true justice or the 'right' course, rather they pursued their own vendettas and interests at the expense of all else. It had only been by bending to their concerns that they had followed him, he thought, with more than a little bitterness.
"Be that as it may, the Iron Throne is not won until I am sat on it. He may be a boy, but he's a boy with a host of seasoned mercenaries at his back and Lord Randyll Tarly at his side."
Joffrey had been a boy, but he had lost at the Blackwater to him all the same. There was no room for a mistake.

"I was born in Flea Bottom, sire, I'm a Hand now, way more than I ever aspired too; I live to serve. Now, I just crave for tranquility and respite in my later years"
He said, lowering his head.
"Sellswords are sellswords, even more unreliable than your own newly sworn vassals. But, has the pretender taken the Stormlands? Would they fight their rightful liege? Trant, Estermont, Tarth, Errol, Selmy, Dondarrion, they all served your brothers both"

”They also turned their cloaks to Joffrey and Tommen. I would rather fight with the sellswords.”
The King grimaced in response. The Stormlands were too distant to be a concern, and most of the lords there had deserted him several times over. They held no loyalty, no honour.
”We make do with what we have, as I always have done. I never had the luxury of Robert or Renly had, being given a King’s seat. I was given some ships and a few rocks in the Narrow Sea, that was the reward for my service. Sellswords, free-riders, Onion lords and Codfish knights are all I have to follow my banners.”
He echoed the words of Renly at Storm’s End, during that fateful parley beneath the walls.
”But those who followed me through fire and ice are loyal men, every one. I would take them over twenty thousand turncloaks.”

He remembered when he sailed to all their seats: many would not even welcome him into their halls, unwilling to deal with a commoner. "You made a kingdom out of rocks and onions, my King. All you have you gained by your own merit"He added. "I would follow you into the flames, if needed, my King, you gave me all I ever had and needed: my son is a knight, I've been ennobled by your hand; despite I was born in a gutter. For this, I'll be always grateful"Seaworth looks into the fireplace. He saw nothing on it, nothing, just flames. Davos raised from the seat. "I'll talk with Snow about going to the Rivers, sire... and... I hope Shireen will be fine and sound in this castle, it troubles me to leave her behind, among uncertain allies"

”You have served me better than any noble born ever has, Lord Davos.”
If only he’d listened to Seaworth sooner. They might have never lost at the Blackwater if Davos had been in command instead of that fool Florent. The King sighed, long and deep.
”I shall leave her in the household of the Lady Stark. If Lord Eddard’s daughter has but a shred of his honour, she shall be safe.”
It kept her out of the Riverlands and out of harm’s way, for the time being.
