"Our lands and homes have been burned, Lord Tyrell. We must strike now, whilst the Greyjoy gone. Retake the Shields, Retake the Arbor." Chimed Goldwyne, whose brother and uncle both died against the Iron Fleet outside Oldtown. Paxter scratched at his whiskered jaw. Baelor Hightower remained silent, for now. "We should at least determine exactly where this Euron is before we sail. I am eager to return as much as any of you, but we should be cautious to leave the safety of the walls with Ironmen and gods know what else prowling our waters."He still saw it when he slept. Clear as day. Tentacles, pulling entire ships to their doom. "More the reason to remain"Said Garlan. "Euron is not leaving his prey, he's not cowering before our walls. He's a hound, his jaws around our ankle. If he even dared attacking the Reach is for more than for simply seizing plunder, because, you can take plunder in the Disputed Lands with hardly a consequence"
He added. "My banners will remain in Oldtown"

Without the support of Garlan and his men, Goldwyne fell silent. Paxter nodded grimly in agreement.
"I will send a few smaller vessels out into the ocean, to see if the reports are true, as well as if the Shields are still guarded."
A few lords under Tyrell murmured in discontentment. It was their lands that were being pillaged, and they simply had to wait behind the walls of Oldtown whilst the Ironmen reaved wherever they liked.

"My riders will keep scouting the land and trying to avoid further trouble along the Mander"Said Garlan. "We're not playing his game, we're not falling into the open gaping mouth of the kraken. I don't want any of you to grow restless, he can do little harm against walls of stones and keeps with his raiding parties"

"As you say, lord. But it would be different if it was Highgarden."
Replied Goldwyne, bitterly. It was his lands that were being pillaged and his kinsmen murdered. Other Redwyne bannermen added their voices to the dissent.
"We will reclaim the Arbor. When we can take Euron Greyjoy on our own terms. If he sails back towards us, what ships we have left will struggle to face him."
Paxter raised his voice over the others.
"We must focus on rebuilding the ships we lost. Euron won't be able to stop us even if he tries, once we have our fleet back."
So long as he doesn't conjure another Kraken, Paxter thought darkly.

"If it was Highgarden I would still hold the city, because I know that with Oldtown Euron poses a greater danger than all his predecessors in the Iron Isles combined"
Said Garlan, leaning on the table.
"This city is immensely rich, but also has something very valuable. Arsenals, shipyards, facilities to build ships and equip an army. And, also, knowledge. The Citadel holds secrets a plenty, it cannot fall into wrong hands. Imagine the possibilities if he could get his hands into certain tomes..."
He waves a hand.
"I say no, the Reach stands in Oldtown. I plant my banner here and I won't budge"
Tyrell looks back at Hightower and Redwyne.
"We shall put the said shipyards to work, we need ships. I suggest we make them fast and agile, to compete with the longships, war galleys"

A few Reachlords grumble in the background, victims of the Ironmen reaving and raiding on their shores with no reprisals. Lord Ambrose and the Red Apple Fossoways are the loudest of them, showing clear sympathy for Goldwyne's plight. A few Hightower vassals joined the choir, with Lord Cuy of Sunhouse aggrieved in particular as his lands had been thoroughly burned.
"My lord, at least allow those affected to defend their castles. My kinsmen will become thralls and salt wives to those savages should they find a way through my walls."
Cuy found the courage to speak up, visibly outraged.
"If Lord Tyrell stopped dithering in the capital the Reach might be properly defended."
Added Fossoway, blunt and angry as ever.

"Fossoway, he's still your liege and my father, hold your tongue for the friendship and the kinship we have"Said Garlan. "I will only fight Euron on the field, not on the waters, where he has the advantage. Let him come and crash like the tides against us"He unsheathed his sword and placed it on the table. "I can fight four men at once and I shall make a quick job of that pretender if he dares getting close"
Tyrell clenches his fist. "But, I shall not leave my grandfather's city and town undefended. I will remain here, my lords, if you want to leave now, you must carry this burden: you might be dooming the Reach. And, anyway, leaving will not restore the goods and lands pillaged. What Euron did to this day can be undone, but, if you leave and diminish our strenght what you might cause will not and you shall have abandoned liege and duty in the most perilous times, breaking oaths and forsaking honor"
Said Garlan looking at his audience, steel-hard gaze. "I said, we hold this city, my lords, until we face Euron on the field, then I will tear his black heart from his corpse and you will be with me. But, for the time being, we stay. Am I clear? Or have the Lords of the Reach forgotten what they swore and what being a knight and vassal means?"

"The Hightower is nigh impregnable to all but dragons, and I doubt Greyjoy has any of those." Baelor assured. "We can fortify the the city, and keep the harbor out of his hands, but I doubt he will meet us in a fair fight. He knows we hold the advantage on land. Just as he currently does at sea. Until one of us comes up with some something to tip the balance we are at an impasse." he acknowledged.
Truly what the Ironborn would do was unknown to Baelor, Euron was a crafty devil; even if he was insane. He was sure to have some more tricks up his sleeve.
"Garlan you speak true about the need for a fleet. We need to rebuild, and it will take time." Warships were typically built in years not months. "Oldtown has some of the finest shipbuilders in all of the Reach. You can rest assured they will be swift and strong"
"I also suggest we redouble our intelligence gathering efforts. We need to know where Greyjoy is, and what he intends to strike next." When the kraken made his next move Baelor wanted to be ready. "Scout are always nice, but perhaps we can get some men to infiltrate his ranks, see whats really going on." Baelor proposed.
One of Garlans earlier points still lingered in the back of his mind. The Citadel... what secrets could lay buried in its halls that could interest Euron. The archives were old, there was no telling what knowledge the Maesters were keeping tucked away. Or was it something else... Perhaps a visit was in order.

"Eh..."
Uttered Garlan, baffled by his uncle's paraphrasing of Garlan's own points few moments after he voiced them.
"Of course, uncle Baelor. As you very well said, we need to know before doing anything"
He just hoped the bannermen would stop complaining for a second and do or say something useful.

For now, the discontented voices fell quiet. But Garlan would do well to mark their concerns, for the plight of those whose lands were pillaged by the Ironmen found a great degree of sympathy in the Reach.

Ravens arrived at the Hightower, carrying messages to Lord Garlan. It informed him of take the troops necessary to crush any Ironborn forces west of the Honeywine.

Lord Bandallon and Blackcrown come to see Lord Hightower and Lord Garlan, after word has come that their castles have been attacked by the ironmen. Garlan wasn't in the mood, so he went straight to the point. "My Lords, what is it that you want from me?"

"My lord, our castles have been taken and pillaged by Ironmen. We request leave to defend our homes from the raiders down the Mander." They were both rather furious themselves, a pair of scowling greybeards. "How many men are you taking to die in the open, falling right into Euron's hands?"Said Garlan, dead serious. "A thousand? That's how he wins, daring you to leave Oldtown and provoking you into leaving the host, to kill you one by one"He arched an eyebrow. "So, how many do you want to take? In defiance of law and obedience to your liege?"
