Rhaegar grimaced. Tyrell he could dismiss out of hand; they had acted because that was what they were supposed to do. Lady Olenna was a wily old cat, and would not risk a move against the King. Connington, on the other hand, was another proposition entirely.
”I can trust precious few men outside the Kingsguard. Ser Lonmouth and Ser Mooton, I could rely upon.” Both men had served as his squires, a bond of brotherhood that a woman could not understand. A smile came unbidden at the memory of them both at the tourney at Lannisport, drinking themselves foolish the night before the lists.
”I can trust men to act in their own interests, if nothing else.” All princes learned such a lesson, sooner or later. True friends were hard to find and harder to keep. A purse of coin here and a whispered promise there, and they were against you, working to plant a knife in your back. ”But we must act quickly. My father will soon demand I ride against Baratheon.”

She nods at that. Two would need to be enough for now.
"We should get the children away from the city. Send them to Sunspear where they will be safe." She pauses and looks at Rheagar. "Your father will not allow me to leave, but perhaps we can get them away in secret. I am scared of what he will do if the war is lost or the city falls. Or even worse if he learns we wish to act against him." The children were pieces Aerys could use and they would be restricted in what they could do if the children were under his thumb.
She looks at Rheagar her eyes filled with worry. "If we can get them out of the capital and to the safety of Sunspear they will be far from both the fighting and your father's madness."

Rhaegar poured himself and his wife a cup of wine. A strong Dornish red, to soothe both their nerves. Though never a great drinker, he gulped down a few mouthfuls as if he were dying of thirst.
”He would have you killed if he found the children gone.” He said, before taking another drink. ”We would have to find a convincing substitute for both without being discovered. And even then, we put another’s child in harms way.” He stared dispassionately into the bottom of his cup. In the dimming light of the evening, his eyes looked almost black.
”It may be our only option. I can get a man to find a ship out of the city, to Dragonstone or Sunspear.”

Elia accepts the cup and drinks. Dornish red always was her favorite it reminded her of the water gardens near Sunspear.
"It is a risk we must take to protect them." It was to risky to leave them here, and if their safety cost her life she would pay the price gladly, and if Aerys was to harm her he would lose the support of Dorne.
"I don't like it either, but I see few options for us." She moved over to the couch taking a seat again and met Rheagar's eyes, "We have so little time."

He moved to sit beside her and took her hand in his own, offering a tender squeeze for comfort. She had always been slight, but never weak, even when in the throes of childbirth when it seemed for all the world that she would not survive the ordeal. It was that inner steel that many underestimated. They saw only the beauty, the kindness and the frailty, and mistook it for weakness. The fires of passion had never burned hot between them, even in those giddy first month on Dragonstone when they spent their days abed 'searching for an heir' as the handmaidens had called it. But he cared for her, as those sacred vows they had both uttered in King Baelor's Sept had demanded. To see her so vulnerable felt like a hammer had caved in his chest and crushed his heart.
"We have time enough yet, my dear." He said, smiling sadly as he brushed a her behind her cheek. Those purple pools of his looked at her strangely, as if seeing her again for the first time. "I will do what I can. Use your countrymen well. They love you too well to betray you."

She smiles leaning into to his arms letting the fear she'd been feeling in the past few months melt away. Rheagar could feel as the tension of the months left her, and she smiled towards him. "They are some of the few I can rely on here." They made up her own personal guard and servants and many of them had known her since she was a girl. They would die before letting any harm come to her, and she was afraid she would have to ask them to make that sacrifice before this was down. Still she pauses a moment and sits up straighter her voice firm with resolve. "We will do what we must to get through this."

To share a few tender moments with his wife was an escape for Rhaegar, a glimpse into a future in which this storm in the False Spring did not cloud their heads. Then came thoughts unbidden, of regret, grief, and guilt. That fate meant something else for him, alive or dead. The thought of Lyanna, alone in her Tower of Joy. It was a selfish fantasy, and it melted away before him like summer snow.
"I will spare you the details of what I will do." He said grimly, breaking the spell. "That way you will not have to lie, or be sullied by such low doings." Painstakingly, he rose from where they had curled up together.
"Will you take me to the children? I should see them. It may be..." He paused, and he caught himself. "The last time for some time, if all goes well."

Elia nods once, "Just promise you won't purposely get yourself killed." She pauses again. "The children are a short way down the corridor with the nurse maid." She exits the room her two guards following as they move down the hallway. It would not be long until they arrive at the door to another room also guarded by two Dornish retainers. They do not hesitate to open the door for the princess, and give the Prince a hard look. Inside the Prince would find both children in the care of the Nurse maid Tilly.

Rhaegar laughed as he threw Rhaenys in the air, his eldest daughter giggling with delight.
"You've grown, little dragon." He cooed, messing her soft dark hair. She could walk and talk now, or make a decent enough attempt of it. There was much he had missed.
" And good of you to join us too, Prince Egg." The Prince smiled sadly as his fair-haired son crawled over, wide eyed and inquisitive, babbling the nonsense of children. For a time he sat with them both, entertaining them with toys and games.

Elia smiles as she watches Rheagar with the children. He'd always been good with them, and it reminded her of a happier time before whatever madness had gripped the realm. Their marriage had never been passionate, but they had been happy. This would perhaps be the last time any such happiness would come to them. She let the outside world slip away as she watched her family for a time.

King Aerys enters the princess's apartments, flanked by Ser Gerold Hightower, not waiting to formally be invited. He snarls at Elia, beady eyes burning with anger.
"What are you and that foolish son of mine planning?! Skulking around in the dark to hire assassins? Usurping my authority from me? Here I thought Baratheon was the arch-traitor, but now I see... oh, now I truly see. My own flesh and blood conspire against me."
He points a gnarled finger at her.
"You will tell me everything and you will tell me now! Unless you want to see your children burn."

Elia stands as several of her ladies in waiting jump in surprise. Her voice doesn't waver as she studies Aerys in his madness. "I an sorry good father, I can not tell you of my husbands plans I do not know them. Last I heard he was going to fight the traitors with the support of my uncle and brothers. Has he not succeeded?" A subtle reminder that her and the childrens safety was insuring the support of not just Rheagar, but also house Martell.

You can't fool me, I know every little secret that goes on in this keep. Rhaegar has gathered the whole realm to usurp my throne and make that Stark girl his queen."Aerys started to walk about restlessly, nervously biting his long nails. "And you... some little birds have told me what you're up to. Sending your men into the city on some skullduggery. Either you're planning to usurp me, or... you're planning to escape King's Landing. Which is it, spit it out!"

She hoped this would work the kings madness was unpredictable. "As long as I live Rhaegar can not have his chosen queen, and if the children live her heirs will never take the throne." She pauses waiting to see how the King reacts to this. If Aerys believed she was nothing to Rheagar perhaps that would ensure her and the children's safety.

Aerys eyed her suspiciously as he paced back and forth in the room. It was impossible to say what the mad king would do next. Ser Hightower remained stoic by the door, hand resting on the hilt of his sword. The King looked over at him, then back at Elia. "A mummer you are not, Princess. I don't know what conspiracy you and my son are planning, and I don't need to. Ser Gerold, from now on Princess Elia will be confined to her bedchambers under armed guard. She is not to leave these chambers without my express permission."A confident smile spread across Aerys's lips. "For the sake of protecting the future Targaryen line, Princess Rhaenys and Prince Aegon are to be kept under armed guard in separate quarters in Maegor's Holdfast. Only those I have approved will be allowed to visit them."
