"The capital can not be left defenseless then. If Robert is coming here a force will be needed to defend the city." Doran says examining Rheagar.

Rhaegar gives Doran a long look as the herald leaves.
"Let us not keep his Grace waiting." He said drily. "I imagine he has much to tell us of rebels and traitors."

Doran turns to a nearby guard. "Send for Lewyn to accompany me. Oberyn is in command until I return."
He then turns back to the Prince noting the tone. "Yes lets go see what the king wants." After a few minutes Lewyn arrives in his White Cloak and they depart for the Red Keep.

The King sat atop the Iron Throne looking as disshelved as ever. Only the crown of Aegon IV looked pristine, sticking out like a sore thumb atop the long, unkept gold-grey hair. The various lords and knights of the court were assembled in the hall as the Prince and the Martells arrived. Before the throne stood the remaining kingsguard and the members of the small council. Aerys leaned forward to look down at his subjects. His eyes shifted between Prince Rhaegar and Prince Doran. His suspicious mind seemed to be working overtime, looking for any hint of conspiracy. With an annoyed tone he spoke.
"Explain yourself, Prince Martell. Two battles have been fought against the traitors, yet Dorne's spears have been absent. What am I to make of such inaction? My patience is great as befitting the Protector of the Realm, but not bottomless."
His ire then turned to Rhaegar.
"And your companion has proven himself useless! He promised me Baratheon's head and he betrayed my trust. I should have him executed for incompetence."

Rhaegar offered his father a courteous bow from the waist. There was a time that they would have embraced in the great hall. Now his father laughed at him from behind a wall of giggling sycophants, and stiff courtesy was the only affection left to him.
"Very well, Your Grace. I shall leave the city this evening to rally what remains of our forces." He replied stoically, though he stiffened somewhat at the words as if he had been slapped. Through gritted teeth, he continued. "I ask that Prince Doran ride with me, for we shall need Dorne's spears against the traitors that gather in the Riverlands."

Rhaegar and Doran were close, too close for his liking. What were the two plotting? Dorne had always been ambivalent to the rule of House Targaryen, no doubt Prince Martell would resent his magnificent rule. Then again, he did hold Princess Elia and her children hostage. Would the two princes dare plot against him with their family's life on the line? He waved them off dismissively. "Granted. When you take command of the army, send Connington back here so I can properly judge him for his incompetence. I hereby name Wisdom Rossart my new Hand."

Doran listens to the the king his mind working. The King was farther gone than he believed. Something would need to change, but there was little he could do here.
"Your grace, I apologize for the delay. It took time to martial this many men, and as I was moving north I received word of the Lord Hands defeat." The army he brought was vast a large portion of Dorne's strength had been assembled. He pauses turning to Rheagar his voice cool as he addresses the prince. "If you will once again join me in our command tent we have much to discuss tonight if we intend to march on the morning." He had been intending to get an audience with Elia, but with the king in such a state it might not be wise to bring it up.

"By your leave, Your Grace."
Rhaegar completed another courteous bow as he took a glance at the new Hand of the King. Rossart was a ugly and sneering man who had provided the King with his new favourite tool of torture: Wildfire. The green fires sometimes filled the worst of his nightmares; the screams, the cracking of skin, the blackening of stone. Sometimes he saw faces being fed to the flames.
"I shall meet you at dusk." He murmured to Doran as he turned and left the hall. While he stalked out of the Keep, he recalled a mad kinsman of his had swallowed wildfire, thinking it would make him sprout wings and breathe flame. Shame filled him as he caught himself wishing his father would do the same.

The Prince returns the envoy with the news that he is first departing north to pacify the Riverlands, and will return to King's Landing as soon as the city is safe from the remaining threat of the rebels.
