@davos: "It brings her joy. That is reason enough for her to continue."The King said, almost a murmur. "I also need a Hand who can read. They will be here soon, I sent for them when Winterfell was taken."Stannis took a cup of water to whet his throat. "Frey holds a tight grip on the Riverlands. The power of the Twins must be broken if the Riverlords are to declare for me."Rickon was half a Tully, this was true. But the rightful heir to Riverrun sat in imprisoned in Casterly Rock, if the news from the south was true. --- "Then by my right as King, I pronounce you wed."Said the King. Crows cawed from the treetops in celebration, as a muted cheers was taken up among the northern lords and stormlander knights. --- "I will bring justice to all my enemies, Lord Edmure. The Freys and Lannisters included."The King leaned forward, towering down on the former Lord of Riverrun even when seated. "My Hand speaks true. You are the Lord of Riverrun. If you bend the knee and swear me your fealty, your past loyalties shall be pardoned. I need good men, and I shall return you to your seat." "Aye, I didn't want to be remembered as the Hand who couldn't read even if his life depended on it. And my heart gladdens to see a lass happy, I miss mine own, sire"He said. His youngest, Stannis and Steffon, were far away, in a distant keep in the Stormlands. Davos prayed every night for them. "Freys are hated by everyone in the kingdoms, save the Lannisters and a few others. They even hate each other, I'm sure. Let Walder die and we'll have an easy time taking the castle: they will be killing each other for the grabs"
He finished the cup. "Finding the lad was a stroke of fortune. I also managed brought a score of Skagosi, they look like they eat nails for supper, who knows, they might be useful too"--- Jon and Val raise, then small Rickon hands him a cape with the direwolf. Tormund takes the leave-covered one Val was wearing and Jon places the Stark sigil over her shoulders. Then, he takes them on his arms and walks down the aisle of torches, lined by lords and ladies, knights and wildlings, heading to the Great Hall, where the reveleries would start. --- "Ser, you shall march with us, you know the terrain and lords big and small and you had friends and allies aplenty"Said Davos. "Your wife will remain in Winterfell, far from the war. I believe my king will agree that if you were to die -the Smith wills not-, we shall place a babe of yours in Riverrun, if that offers you some solace; as reward for your loyalty"

Jon was brought from his meditation and brooding by someone uttering his name. He looked for the source and saw a ruin of a man, the hard brittle and white, the tooth broken, fingers missing. He frowns, then looks at the kraken over the chest and a certain something on his face. He raises from the root he was sitting, breathless. "Theon?!"He puts the sword aside, resting on the large trunk. "I..."He had betrayed Robb, killed Cassel and brought much sorrow to the North. Yet... he knew he had paid for it, this no longer was a man carrying guilt, whatever his sins, they were long due. "How?"
Jon approached the man. He didn't feel pity, he found only sadness and grief for a time lost, when everyone was happier and lived carelessly. Theon took a step back by pure instinct. A part of him feared the wrath of House Stark for all he had done. For all Theon had done."...I don't know. I don't even know if I'm truly alive. I guess you've heard what Ramsay did to me..." Even mentioning the name of the bastard brought a vile taste to his mouth."But I saved her. I saved Arya... or Jeyne, truth be told. I saved her from... him. She's safe now. We're all safe now, now that he's dead. He's dead." Saying it was like a prayer. He is dead. He is dead. He is dead. Theon fell to his knees, sobbing."Jon! Jon, please forgive me! I betrayed Robb, my brother! I don't know what to do anymore, now that he's dead!" Theon did not even know if her referred to Robb or Ramsay at this point.

"I will do my best to serve you, your majesty."
Edmure knelt but promptly rose to answer Davos' question
"I do not know, Lord Seaworth. The Mallisters have been imprisoned, I hear. And Lord Piper's heir is also Frey's hands. The rest of them, maybe, if they have any men left."

Even if you commited many crimes that was not the way to atone for them, this was savagery. This was monstruous"Jon looks at him with grey somber eyes. "Jeyne will soon be back, she's to come with Queen Selyse, the king told me as much. She will be taken care of. Thanks to you"Snow remains a moment standing still when Theon crumbles, but, then, he does something surprising, Jon grabs Theon's arms and embraces him like a child, the prodigal son. The bastard kneels by Theon's side, his arms around him. "You're forgiven"Jon grabs his face. "Whatever wrongs you did, you paid dearly for them. I have no hatred left in my heart, least so for you. Forgive and be forgiven, this much is true"
Then, he helps him to stand again. "Come, sit with me here, Theon, as father did"Jon offers him a spot in a root, like a white limb rising from the fertile earth. "Robb died because of Frey's evil and Tywin's machinations, his blood isn't in your hands"

"You can return to them and your onions soon enough, when this war is over and the Iron Throne is won."
Stannis moved towards the fire, gazing into it. The King frowned.
"I will not give Walder the luxury of such a death. He will die with a noose around his neck."
There was a pause. Baratheon looked deeper into the flames.
"The worst is behind us, for now. At least in the Riverlands we shall not freeze to death."
--
"They will fight for their rightful lord and king rather than kneel to a treacherous worm like Baelish. If not they are men of no honour, and will die as traitors."
Stannis gripped the arms on the throne, nodding at his Hand's assertion.
"The Twins will fall. I have broken better men than Lord Walder Frey."

"I offered Snow legitimisation on the Wall, to name him Lord of Winterfell. He refused me."Stannis bluntly replied, a shadow passing over his face. "I named Rickon his brother's heir, as Lord of Winterfell. What Robb Stark wrote in his will matters not. It is words on paper, the words of a dead king that usurped his crown from my realm."The King's jaw clenched, skin stretched like cured leather. "I will say no more." Lady Maege nodded, seeing that there was no point in further arguments. One reason more to mourn the state of leadership within the North, even though she had faith in Rickon becoming some day a good and kind lord, just like his brother. A shame that she might not see the winter, when he will be around Robb's age, for nature or the war will most certainly claim the She-Bear's life before. "Very well then, I'll discuss further matters with Lord Rickon then", she replied diplomatic, so far patient, "If there are any military matters you wish to discuss regarding my retainers or anything else that concerns my House, I will answer to it, your grace."Eventually she would search for Lord Stark and his brother, Jon Snow, once the talk with the King was settled.

With the lordly solar and chambers ocuppied by Lord Stannis, she found them both in the courtyard. Rickon had settled in a chair, covered in layers of fur, in the covered roofed gallery overlooking the inner courtyard, where Snow was sparring with two men at once. Steel rang as it hit the Valyrian sword, a song that Maege herself might have been familiar with. It seemed than Jon was more than able to fight his opponents, one of which wore the livery of Whitehill -wielding good castle steel-, while the other was a tall, nimble and handsome wildling with an axe. Rickon cheered at times, a carved direwolf in his lap, alternatively caressing and playing with a very large direwolf by his side. Ghost was chewing a bone in a corner, silent, but he raised his head when he saw Maege approach.

Noticing Snow and the Direwolves first, Maege approached Rickon at first, seeing that there would be enough time to talk with the bastard about his potential heritage later. Although she didn't mention it, Lady Mormont was surprised that Stannis himself had offered the boy legitimization earlier on - either out of desperation or by a sudden glimmer of compassion. She presumed the first thing, but perhaps Stark and Snow could achieve more on their own, now that the seeds were laid. "Mylord Stark", she said devout, kneeling in front of him alongside her daughters immidiately, "I am Lady Maege Mormont, Lady of Bear Island and these are my daughters Lyra and Jori."The girls, despite their teenage age, offered the young lord of Winterfell a smile, knowing their manners at court for the moment. Eventually Alysane Mormont would join the reunion of the family as well, given that she had so far accompanied Jon Snow solely to find Winterfell retaken. At least she was able to tell her mother now, how the bastard had brought Roose Bolton to justice, Longclaw having struck down the traitor, when the time came for it.

The blankets fall and he stands on the chair's seat, leaning on the back and looking at Maege with bright eyes. "I would love to... I think I'm lord Stark now, so you should do it! Please?"
The five-year-old had ruddy cheeks from the cold, two shiny blue eyes and a mop of copper-like hair.

"I should have been there for him, should have protected him, or died with him. It was a fool's errand to try to find common ground with my father... I was not even a son in his eyes, just a green land boy playing at being Ironborn. I think he was right, too. Robb was my brother, a true brother. I loved him, Jon, and I would have given my life for his cause. Instead I betrayed his trust and thrust a dagger in his back. And now the North hates me, want me to pay for my crimes with my head. Only King Stannis is keeping my alive, and I doubt he'll do it for long. I've half a mind to let them take it, just end my misery."

"My watch has ended, maybe yours is yet to start. I couldn't stomach if Stannis burned you, I would beg him to carry the deed with a sword in hand, as Northmen do. But, I do believe your story still has no end"
Hi arm around Theon's shoulders, which feel weak and thin. "You endured much, a turncloak and a betrayer, yes, but whoever you wronged are now dead and your guilt is long gone. I would have myself broken the oath I made to the Watch, hadn't they slaughtered me like a pig. But, if you want I will beg Stannis to pardon you to remain at Winterfell, or at least to let you don the black"

The five-year-old had ruddy cheeks from the cold, two shiny blue eyes and a mop of copper-like hair. Her daughters chuckled about the young lord's enthusiasm, while the She-Bear solely smiled warmly with a gentle nod. "Well, you might not want to ask for that, for bears can be furious animals, if you anger them too much", she noted with a wink, "But it is true that you are our Lord now. You may not rule over the animals of the forest, for as nature is the domain of our Old Gods, but we are your loyal subjects indeed.""He's a cute lad for sure", Jory noted with a warm smile, before turning towards Lady Mormont, "Mylady Mormont, with your permission I would like to tell the boy at least from our mission at Greywater Watch and the Crannogmen, we met, if we can't show him our... shapeshifting abilities, while you attend your meeting with Snow."Although Maege gave her daughter a warning look to not overdo it with the jesting, she nodded, appreciating her daughter taking her time to keep the young lord busy. As she waited for Snow to finish his training, Alysane would tell her of what has happened since the retaking of Deepwood Motte from Asha Greyjoy's forces, mentioning also how Snow has executed the traitor Bolton with Longclaw, just like his Lord father and his kingly brother used to. It filled the old She-Bear with pride to hear that despite Stannis' iron gouverment over the North that at least one of the Stark's kin was still upholding the old traditions. OOC: Brief correction, the daughters are in their twenties as well, small error on my side, which doesn't change events though.

I will purchase it from him with good coin, if need be."For a moment, the King frowned, and then drew back from the fire. If Manderly had not brought food, they would have starved here days ago, and victory would have meant nothing. Lord Lamprey had stores prepared to last months, even years, by the look of his larder."Lord Walder has lived ninety years, he can wait a few months for me. That is if the Riverlords don't kill him first."

"Even if Lord Walder dies, there's Black Walder, who's a vicious man. We must not underestimate how dangerous the Freys can be, especially when backed into a corner"
Edmure was worried the men did not understand the threat presented by the Freys.
"If you allow me access to the rookery, I'll send a raven to all my vassals in the Riverlands. I'll tell them to raise their men and be prepared, but we must act quickly and strike while the iron is hot."
