...In all literary genre, in any art the wisest, Alexandria!
The city of the Greek-born pharaos, licked by the great inner sea, port of wonders and destination of every piece of knowledge in the world. There was not a single city greater than Alexandria anywhere from the far away lands of the Chinese to the Pillars of Hercules. There, poets, scholars, priests, traders, conquerors, sicophants, kings, princes, scientists had made their home and fortunes. And, even if it was no longer a dominant power, the kings of Ptolemy's blood still ruled over the Nile-blessed country, from the Mediterranean to the deep reaches of Africa, where the sun scorched the flesh of man, turning it black like ebony. Such was the fame and reputation of marble-covered Alexandria that even a Roman would be marvelled by it. Even Lucius Licinius Crassus, proconsul of Rome.
He arrived to the city, in a large multi-deck warship, escorted by a number of galleys, sent by pro-consul Sulla. A sufficient protection for one of the highest-ranked officers in the Republic. Crassus wore a pristine white toga, with a purple band to signify his imperium, and he stood proudly at desk, while the ship passed under the shadow of the Pharus, a wonder of the age that would never be surpassed. The city laid open, like a pleasant lover, and sights were already something to behold from the galley, thought an impressed proconsul.
His arrival was announced to the palace, where the allied kings of Egypt resided, next to the glories of the Library and the Museum.

The Egyptians received Crassus with due pomp into Alexandria, a sizeable procession being laid out for the Roman ambassador. Wonders of all the ancient world were wheeled out to greet him; lions, tigers, elephants, and even the strange hairy creatures from far east that walked upright like men but howled like dogs. Ptolemy Alexander, the tenth king of that name, was waiting in the grand palace of the God Kings, surrounded by viziers, attendants, mercenaries, and slaves of all shapes and sizes. They were clad from head to foot in silks, perfumes, gold and gemstones, a single piece of royal jewellery enough to pay an entire empire's ransom. Even to Crassus, a man renowned for his luxury, the full decadence of the east must have cut a startling comparison to his short haired, toga-wearing countrymen.
Ptolemy Alexander was a wiry, soft spoken man, with eyes that darted from one person to another with startling speed. Even on his Pharaonic throne, he seemed uncomfortable. It was not everyday that Roma came knocking. On Cyprus, his predecessor and elder brother, Ptolemy Lathyros, was still living, and the King ever lived in fear that he would come and retake his throne with Roman swords at his back. At his side sat his young niece and Queen Berenice, who had likewise inherited the mousy look of the inbred Macedonian dynasty. As was the custom, they were overseen by the all-controlling Eunuchs, who took into their hands the formalities of court protocol, introducing Crassus to the divine King of Kings, son of Amun Ra, et cetera...

"Ave, Ptolemy Alexander, Lord of the Two Lands"
Said Crassus. He was startled by the luxury and pageantry displayed before his eyes, the sheer magnificence of the heirs of Alexander himself. It was breath-taking, but Crassus knew all too well how to act and present a public face, so he remained composed, dignified. His voice, like a clarion, was clear and beautiful, with deep undertones.
"Mithridates Eupator, self-proclaimed heir of Alexander and King of Kings, have moved in force against the Res Publica"
He gestured fancily, but in the right measure, not too much, not too little.
"He has conquered Pergamum and moves towards the sea. His phalanxes will try to conquer all the sea, from the Aegean to the shores of Cyprus... His ships already try to control the isles and seek the friendship of their rulers"
Crassus throws the name of that particular isle casually, as if he didn't know better.
"The so-called king of kings is gathering allies. Tigranes of Armenia! The pretender king of Syria, weak scion of Seleucus Magnus is marshalling his own silver-shields bearers to his aid! He, this despot and tyrant, gazes around, and the minor kings, claimants and pretenders in Asia and the Levant look up to him as a new Alexander"
The pro-consul raises one arm with extended hand.
"However, Rome can and will stop him. But, the help of our friends and allies is needed, much needed in times of need"
Crassus looks around, letting his message be felt.
"And Rome never forgets her allies, particularly those of the line of Evergetes Tryphon"
That included the claimant in Cyprus. A veiled threat? Maybe so. But subtle enough.
"Is the glorious king Ptolemy Alexander, heir of the Megas in the land of the Nile, willing to stand for his natural allies and friends? In exchange, Rome will never forget who came when the hour was right and the enemy was at the gates"
ooc: I have a minimum of +7. But I think it could be more with cursus honorum?

"Hail, voice of Rome, Pro-Consul Crassus. You are known to us, here in the land of the great Zeus Ammon's heirs."
Called out the reedy voice of the King's chief minister. It was customary for the King not to speak unless in more private audiences, and all knew the eunuchs spoke the will of Egypt's divine monarchs.
"Alas, our glorious king is confronted with pretenders on his northern coast. Surely, such a dangerous and potent threat would prove a natural ally for Mithridates Eupator, scourge of Asia. I believe it is all our best interests if this vile pretender is removed, for while he exists he strangles our food exports and will surely attack any efforts we make on Rome's behalf."
The minister licked his lips, and smiled in a sickly fashion.
"With the land of the Gods made safe, our glorious and divine son of Ra could commit whatever Rome requires to the War effort.

Any conflict disturbing the natural order set by heavenly gods will be dealt with"Said Crassus. "Rome will solve this threat, and you, oh noble king, He of the Sedge and Bee, will be satisfied"
He added. "However, the Res Publica shall be reassured of your willingness to help and will need an enticement to face yet another Asian princeling while Mithridates looms over Greece and our Eastern provinces"

"We shall commit ships and men, fear not."
All grew silent as the King of Egypt raised a hand. Ptolemy, it seemed, had blinked first.
"If Cyprus is returned to us from the pretender, curse his rotten heart, when Mithridates is defeated."

"Noble Ptolemy, I heard your wish and words"
Said Crassus, politely.
"With such, our dealings are concluded. Now, I request your majesty's permission to visit the city, including Alexander's tomb and the treasured Library of your forebears"

"Granted."
Ptolemy the tenth, undoubtedly the lesser of his great forebears, nonetheless had the magnanimity to grant the Roman's request. That Megas Alexandros himself was entombed here was a source of great pride of the Pharaohs, and the keystone of their legitimacy as rulers. They were keen to parade it whenever possible. After the treaty had been properly signed and concluded, Crassus was given the freedom of Alexandria.
The Egyptians truly are weaker than their old grandeur, but nonetheless give the Romans 1000 heavy infantry, 500 cavalry, and 1500 Light Infantry. Many of these are mercenaries, some even being Roman by birth. They also lend Crassus 7 Quinquireme with which to carry these men to Asia Minor.

Alongside the mercenaries he brought aboard some souvenirs, at his own expense, that he had purchased in the city, including fine statues and good copies of Greek classics produced in the excellent workshops that fed the ever-hungry Library. Now, he had to head for Cyprus proper. And maybe into Libannon, where the rival king of Syria was camping, prepare to move against his kinsman. The pro-consul enjoyed much this kind of pursuit. The Cypriotic king is warned beforehand of Crassus' arrival as ambassador and representative of the Senate.

Almost the exact replica of Egypt awaited Crassus in Cyprus, albeit the grandeur of Alexandria could not quite be properly copied amidst the rugged provincialism of Cyprus. It was a fine palace that Ptolemy IX had made for himself, for certain, and the King, slaves, and attendants were all properly outfitted. There must have been a sense of deja vu for the Roman, as the court formula proceeded exactly the same as before, with seemingly endless ceremony and flowery introductions made between the Pro-Consul and the Cypriote King. Ptolemy looked similar to his brother, but ruddier; no make up could hide the alcohol induced redness in his face.
The complex web of Asiatic kings was difficult to track; this one was brother of Egypt and brother in law of one of the Syrian pretenders, Antiochus VIII having eventually married both Ptolemies' sister Cleopatra Selene, also the ex wife of them both. Likewise had Antiochus IX once been their brother in law, albeit that sister of the Ptolemaic kings had died prematurely. And all of them hated each other.

"Great and noble Ptolemy"
Said Crassus.
"I come on behalf of the Roman Senate, seeking your help and support in the war against Mithridates"
He started, again using his best voice and manners.
"This scourge of the Earth has tendrils and agents everywhere. His ships already crossed the seas. He found friends in Greece, Armenia and even Syria. We heard even your brother-in-law, Grypus, has thrown his lost alongside the Pontic king and has marshalled his shieldbearers"
The consul stood with his toga.
"Soon will Mithridates Eupator come knocking to Cyprus proper, my king, but he might not bring what you seek. Maybe... the winds will carry ill omens from Southern shores to your own, noble ruler"
He gestured acompanying his words.
"You have always been friend of Rome. Now, when the dogs are barking at our gates, we seek the support of noble Ptolemy"

Ptolemy's vizier, a eunuch clad in gold and silks, spoke on behalf of the King, who seemed to have inherited the same flinty and fickle mannerisms of his brother. No wonder the dynasts had grown so unpopular in Alexandria as of late.
"The Lord of the Two lands and King of Cyprus wishes to know when Rome will help in regaining his kingdom, lost to the fickle schemes of his brother, who he names as usurper and kinslayer."
The spider's web of Ptolemaic politics was not to be understood by the Romans, who struggled to comprehend the ways of these eastern despots. Like a fly, it was easy to be caught in the middle.
"Likewise does he name Grypus an enemy and traitor, and sympathises with the Republic. The Syrian dynasts are not to be trusted. Perhaps the king should be replaced with one that is more amenable to the cause of Rome."
The Vizier licked his lips as the King nodded sternly.

After all, Rome does not forget her friends and allies in times of need. We always reward those who came when the wolves were at our gates"
He added. "And Rome will find a better king than this despot, Grypus, one who might be a life-long friend. So, are you noble king, willing to lend your arms and ships against this fierce enemy?"

The Vizier pursed his lips.
"The Great King desires to aid his friend and ally Rome, of course. First, he wishes to come to an... arrangement, one that would see Roman coin borrowed to reclaim Alexandria from the usurper king at a future date. Of course, the fine details could be arranged properly at a later date, most excellent Pro-Consul."
The eunuch gave an obsequious bow. Ptolemy sat in observation, stone faced, almost statuesque. He was breathing heavily, audible throughout the throne room.

Until then, the Roman treasure cannot and will not be strained"He raised a finger. "However, it's true, once the Pontic tyrant is repulsed, Rome will have her sights again on the region, and whoever was amiable to her interests in these shores will be properly and handsomely rewarded"
Added Crassus. "I have read reports of large Mithridatic fleets crossing the Aegean. A threat for all those who share these waters, from Rhodes to your own princely seat, lord Ptolemy. Will you lend your end to Rome then, you Alexander's heir?"
