”The Syrians are weaker even than the Bithynians, caught up in the throes of their own civil strife. If needs be we shall strike against them and give ourself a foothold along the Euphrates, once Mithridates is driven back into his mountains.”
Sulla stated, confidently. Armenia was a different matter. Those hills and mountains were a veritable maze, easy to wander into a trap without local guides and sufficient support.
”With the waters clear, you could take a ship to the Ptolemies yourself. I am certain it would delight them to receive an honoured guest famed for his rhetoric the world over.”
The Pro-Consul suggested, gently. The support of Egypt would not be so bad, and it was a mission that would allow Crassus to save face while Sulla led the men north.

"Securing a steady grain supply from the Greek kings of Egypt would be invaluable if we want to get deep into Asia"

”Their men and ships would be even better. Hemmed in as we are, it is our only chance at receiving reinforcement for the present.”
Replied Sulla, glad to see his colleague seemed to amenable to the plan.
”If you were to return with a fresh alliance with Egypt, I dare say the previous events of the war might be forgotten.”
Felix smiled thinly.

Immediately, Sulla ensured the legions were well supplied and provisioned, using the newly won mastery of the sea to ensure shipments of food from Crete and Rhodes were on their way to Cilicia. Positioning his legions in a fortified encampment next to the Cilician gates, he would be well informed should any Pontic attempt come to push the Romans out of Asia Minor from land. Watches were kept on both sides of the pass, though the Imperator suspected that Mithridates would be busy on the far side of the mountains for the time being.
In the meanwhile, Sulla paid from his own war-chest for the raising of several thousand allied cavalry. He also sent men throughout the province to conscript a number of the local Cilician tribes to assist him, at the point of a sword if necessary. Once his total force was amassed, he would break out the Cilician gates and retake Cappadocia, before moving to march on Mithridates, wherever he might be.

A missive arrives in Cilicia, addressed to Sulla, signed and sealed by Proconsul Mugillanus. He requests a naval detachment to aid his siege of Athens, so the rebellious city and Mithridates' foothold in Greece can be put down once and for all.

Much as he felt passed, ignored and overall discontent with his role on Crete. Lepidus felt the same on the Asian mainland. His wounds felt more elastic but still troubled him. Perhaps only between the ears but he felt more isolated by the day.

When he was not engaging with the men or ordering his subordinates, Sulla busied himself in his command quarters. He had begun writing a history of the war in Greek, or more accurately, was dictating to his learned slaves what they would be writing on his behalf. If all went well, it would be published in Roma upon his return, naturally extolling his virtues as a commander and warrior. In many ways, it was a history of himself, documenting his cunning capture of Jugurtha, his feats against the Cimbri, and then finally his triumphs in Hispania and Crete. In the privacy of those pages, he mused on the fate of those before him who had campaigned in Asia, with the shadow of Megas Alexandros looming over them all. The Macedonian King made all feel inadequate, as the old adage went, but Sulla reckoned that he had been given his army and kingdom by the whims of good fortune. It was a mere accident of birth that he had been made king of Macedon, albeit he had made the most of it in leading them to conquer half the world. In his work, Sulla Felix reflected on the virtues of Romans, in that a good citizen must earn that which he has through hard toil and sweat. No birth right had given him command of this army, or made him Consul of Rome. But even still, like Alexander, he considered himself felix. Lucky. A trait prized more than even genius.
But, all good, and even lucky, commanders must beware of hubris. He had not defeated Mithridates yet. In his usual pragmatic fashion, Sulla sent Lepidus out beyond the Cilician gates with a small alae of cavalry, with a task to survey all that he saw in terms of terrain, enemy presence, and to note down any good, rough ground that would favour the flexible legions over the clunky and immobile Phalangitai that the Diadochi so favoured.

Lepidus was reluctant to go, but went as he was commanded. He hand picked several men who he fought with in the Cinmbrian campaign and others. The mission would eventually be considered a stellar success. Multiple enemy patrols, very small scale would be killed by the Lepidus party. Lepidus found that only one path towards the city was heavily guarded by not only Gordius but that also another, very sizable force was steadily joining up with Gordius. Perhaps Miuthradites himself. The Romans faced to choice to march uphill and fight for every inch or sail away. Lepidus the Younger provided a map when he returned to Sulla.

Lepidus is rewarded by Sulla with promotion from Tribune to Legate upon his return, and prepared the legions to move out. The Crassan legions would hold their ground in Cilicia, with Sulla figuring that seven thousand men would be enough to defend the near impenetrable Cilician gates from the enemy force.
Gathering his own legions and auxiliaries, Sulla marched out of the Cilician gates with the cavalry in the vanguard. Missives were sent to the Galatians, Rome's last ally in the region, asking them to prepare some men to drive Mithridates into the sea. Lepidus was sent out with the horse to forage and loot the Cappadocian kingdom as the Romans made their way northwest, while a messenger was sent to Mithridates requesting peace talks with the King of Kings. The Romans would avoid Mithridates army for the time being, and pillage their way through Cappadocia towards Galatia. A sizeable party of cavalry shadows the column to keep an eye out for any approaching Pontic force.

Among the number of Romans that came to make a name for themselves, Lucius ‘the Younger’, son of the disgraced Lucius Atilius Regulus, came to join the men who flocked to Sulla in the hopes of riches, slaves, and earned reputations. Given the recent actions by his father, the young Regulus believed this was the best place to polish his ancestors name and reinvigorate it. As such, Lucius came to the encampment to find where he could be among the many others who sought command and glory.

To prove himself, Lucius is given a post among the scouts that shadow Sulla's army. While a seemingly minor role, success in this area is of great importance to the commander.

Lepidus rode with his horse long and hard to find what he sought. When eventually a village was sighted. Lepidus gathered the men. They had been spread out, to maximize their reach but now they were needed together. Strength in unity Lepidus said earlier to his men when he outlined his idea to march like so. As the men gathered and the gallop was engaged, the ground shook as the horses hoves hit the dust, a flat dust cloud followed behind them, trained scouts would know it means that this is a cavalry force. The Roman drew their sword and Lepidus roared "ROMA VICRIX" as the villagers were scrambling for cover. The fight was uneventful. The Roman slaughtered every last one of them. They gathered the supply's, they even had to use several carts from the village to bring back the loot, food and water. On his was back to Sulla, Marcus the Younger and his men manage to fall upon a goatherder, probably an inhabitant of the village they fell upon earlier that day. They seize some 99 goats. A gigantic bounty. With them secured Lepidus and his men returned back to Sulla's camp where he offered the goats to Sulla in person. Perhaps for offering, perhaps for a great dinner.

The Galatians express their wish to remain neutral in the conflict. Fearing Rome won't protect them and knowing that the Greeks will lose to Roman power. Perhaps the Pro Consul should chose another way to open diplomatic channels.

Sulla keeps half of the goats to be sacrificed or slaughtered for provisions, while the other half makes for a gift for the Galatian chieftains. Felix reminds them of their existing obligations to the Republic as an ally and protectorate of the Roman people. Nonetheless, The Pro-Consul is in a generous mood. He offers plunder, loot, and land gains after the wars conclusion should the Galatians provide men and supplies to the Republic. There is no 'neutral' sides, all will either come under the sway of Mithridates or remain friends with Roma. If they do not aid Sulla, then Mithridates will come for them eventually regardless.
While waiting for an answer, Sulla constructs a fortified camp and has the scouts keep watch from the east. Should no response come from the king of kings, then he would march on Cappadocia from the north.

The Pro-Consul accepts, with payment to be concluded at the end of the war, once Mithridates is defeated by Rome. {Galatians} 4500 Heavy Infantry 2700 Light infantry 900 Cavalry 900 Gallic Elites -- Once the treaty is accepted, Lepidus is summoned to report to the Pro-Consul's tent. "Salve, Lepidus."Sulla had recently treated with the chieftains, and had changed back from his civilian garb into military regalia."Well done on the scouting mission. You have proven your capacity for independent action once again. I am glad to see you have fully recovered from your wounds."Felix left the siege of Sitia to Cinna, judging the man's experience to be better fitted for that particular assignment. But, sometimes a man with recklessness was useful."I have another task for you in this vein. Our new Galatian allies shall begin the task of liberating Asia from Mithridatic rule. I want you to take them and recover our lost cities in Asia, beginning with Pergamum. You shall be given ten thousand denarii as a war purse."Sulla gestured for his pet Greek to have this all taken down. They were most useful creatures."Any war booty, plunder, and tribute shall be returned to me to be partitioned at the end of the campaign. You may be harsh with the Asian cities, but remember, they are Roman subjects. I want no massacres or destructions. Do not let these Gauls too tightly off their leash. They may be Roman trained, but they are still barbarians."The Pro-Consul wagged his finger, knowing the reputation of the lad's father."I shall keep Mithridates busy. It is vital that we secure a port in Asia Minor to allow ourselves easy resupplied. I want Pergamum and Ephesus captured, and then you can do the same with Bithynia. If you find yourself in trouble, send word. Understood?"
