Publius is encamped within the mountains in Dardanian territory, a land that is fast becoming cold and inhospitable. Worse still, Lepidus' men spot a large Dardanian warband converging on Publius' isolated force, cutting off his supply lines and moving to put him under siege.

Lepidus weighs in on his procursatores and exploratores to give him exact troop compositions and to tell him if the road is safe. If so Lepidus marches on the Roman encampment.

The Dardanii number at least thirty thousand, having amassed a large warband to force the Romans out. At least half of these are heavily armoured infantry. As Lepidus marches through the mountains, they harass his force incessantly with skirmishing and raids upon his baggage train. One hundred legionaries are killed in these skirmishes, and they slow Lepidus's march considerably. Despite this harassment, they send envoys to the Romans, displaying a strange willingness to negotiate.

"Hail Roman. We wish for you to leave our lands. Our Chieftains have only fought your people when you have disrespected our borders. We have no wish to fight, but you seem keen for it to be so."
Said the barbarian, rather gruffly. They were a strange people, these Illyrians, being rather more stocky and dark of hair than the Gauls.
"We shall be friends if you wish, for we have no desire for war, but these are our lands."

Lepidus nodded as the interpreter said his say. "The terms are acceptable to Rome. The terms of our old treaty stand and we will leave your lands." Lepidus was in a rush, he had to travel back to Rome to stand in the elections. The Illyrians were a special breed in Lepidus his mind. It felt good they were fierce. His two new legions would be fine additions in his fighting force which now was the largest in the Republic. "If these terms are acceptabel of course" Lepidus added. This was becoming quite the diplomatic feat.
