”I motion that Gaius Fabius Maximus Atellus be tasked with assuming command of the Sicilian War and bringing the current governor, Gaius Servilius, back to Rome to face charges of corruption and incompetence. Should his term end before the war expires, he shall have his Imperium prorogued for a year to serve as Pro-Praetor.”Metellus would have preferred sending a Marian off to drudge around with slaves for two years, but it appeared that Maximus was dead set on ending the war himself. So be it. LEX SICILIA- Gaius Fabius Maximus Atellus hereby assumes command of all military troops in Sicilia and shall destroy the rebel slaves as quickly as possible.
- Gaius Fabius Maximus Atellus will also serve as Pro-Praetor of Sicilia the following year (101 BCE) to ensure the province recovers from the conflict.
- Gaius Servilius is hereby relieved of his Imperium over Sicilia. Gaius Fabius Maximus Atellus is charged with ensuring Servilius returns to Rome to be charged for embezzlement and corruption.

"I support sending senator Atellus to Sicily" Saturninus rose from his seat. Let the optimate dogs deal with the slaves they so despite Saturninus thought. The populares would take the honor of saving Rome from the Barbarian hordes.
"I also support senator Silanus and Sertorius for consul" Saturninus added, they would likely occupy themselves with the war against the barbarians entirely. Saving Rome would grant them much prestige while his the optimates would have to deal with the reforms. Saturninus nodded to these two men, if he wanted to advance his legislative reforms he would need some good allies to cover his back.

"Lepidus for Consul and Strabo for Praetor i say, now is time for the Roman families of old times to prove themselves when Rome needs us most!" Appius Pulcher said from the rafters. Appius like most of his gens hated the commoners and plebs. It was unfortunate that his father supported the Gracchi brothers though, a mistake that he would seek to correct in the years to come.

Publius Crassus having found himself a seat in the lower rows of senate chamber spoke up. "I too shall stand for Aedile. With war on our doorstep, the cities grain supply needs to be secure and preparations made for re-provisioning the legions that are in the field." Age and obscurity had deterred him from aiming higher, but given current chaos perhaps a Praetorship was within grasp next election.
Having served under Marius, and those before him, Publius knew full well what these aspiring Consuls were in for. The Cimbri were not like the Gaulic tribes of the past; it would be a hard fought victory.

Lepidus sat and counted within his head. the odds were looking good. Nice words were spoken about him. As Sulla announced his intention Lepidus rose and voiced his support. As well as for Crassus.

"Senator Crassus is right. Rome needs grain. But Rome also needs money. Thanks to the efforts of the late Consul Marius, the treasury is empty. If we do not raise funds soon, we will not have enough to ensure the raising of new legions should the worst come to pass."
Opined Metellus, gesturing upwards with a few fingers raised.
"I propose an emergency tax be levied on the provinces immediately. We must be prepared for every eventuality."

It will be hard to gain the taxes from our Gallian provinces.
Spoke the voice of Atellus.
We should not even try to gain revenues of Gallia Transalpina and Gallia Cisalpina, least bandits or those barbarians get their hands on our coin.
The Senator then raises his hand.
Nonetheless, I agree on an emergency taxation. We will need funds to levy new legions, secure grains, and send some forces to ensure Sicilia is to be properly ready to put down the revolt.

Lepidus stood victorious as was announced he won the election by a landslide. He moved towards Sertorius to shake his hand and congratulate you. As the needed good wishes were done over with Lepidus moved to the Consular chair and took the word as the hall quieted down.
"Senators, this hard duty falls upon my shoulders but as my ancestors before me, as the great consuls before me, I shall serve this republic. I shall smite the invaders from our lands. I will pursue them with a vigor, unknown to the barbarian horde. Together with setorius we shall seek complete defeat of the enemy that dared to defy Rome, that dare to dey Marius. They will know complete extinction. Their very smell, their very memory will be whiped from existence!" Lepidus spoke with an eagerness, trying to inspire his fellow Romans and seek unity in a time of disunity.

It was a crowning moment for a career, especially for one of the Novi Homines; Sertorius had no name or illustrious ancestry to call upon as Lepidus did. But now even in death his name and likeness would be preserved in the halls of his home as one of the Consuls of the Republic, the founder of a dynasty. In time he hoped for greater honours.
"A well fought election. I salute Silanus, a true son of Rome that loves his country." Sertorius began, deferring his head to the other Populare who ran with him. Lepidus had the backing of all the old aristocracy, and so had swept the field clean. At least they had one candidate in the chair. "I must echo the words of my colleague, and implore the Senate to send us out into the field to face the Cimbri with all due haste. This threat to Rome ends now. Our honour shall be avenged."
Quintus silently wondered how the forces would be divided, and if this Lepidus would prove as fit to command as the Optimates hoped. For all their sakes, he hoped so.
"I move that Lepidus take command of the forces formerly under Marius. I also volunteer to ride with him as his second, in my capacity as Praetor."
Interjected Sulla, who appeared to be particularly pleased at the prospect of returning to the campaign.

"Let Sertorius take command of the Marian legions, he served under the leadership of Marius after all"
Saturninus did not want the bulk of the legions to be under an optimate. They'd steal the glory of a military victory

"Lepidus is the senior consul. By custom he should be placed in a superior position of command. Or does the will of the Roman people count for naught?" Chided Sulla disdainfully. "When last I looked, those were Roman legions. Marius was not Rome."

Silanus felt the scorn and shame of defeat, but he knew that in time his ascendency would come. One was not denied the consulship without some measure of hurt feelings. "Tee lessons of history are too easily forgotten." Silanus began. "Our greatest defeats were borne from dueling Consuls in the field, no. Sertorius was a pupil of Marius, who won so many victories. Fate robbed us of Marius, but not those who learned from him. Lepidus must command in Sicily." It was the lesser of the commands, and would diminish Lepidus even if he was successful.
-----
Strabo remained silent, he was content to have succeeded in his election, and set his mind towards working as to how he might enrich himself.

"We have already decreed that Atellus will go to Sicily." Metellus drawled, already tired of the politicking. "If the Consuls cannot work together, then the Senate shall strip them both of their command and we shall elect others. They shall rally the Legions in the immediacy. Let them decide amongst themselves who takes what."
---
"The Cimbri are already upon us, Conscript Fathers. Now is not the time to argue amongst ourselves. I will share the command with Lepidus gladly if it means Roma is kept safe. If I am commanded, I shall ride this very night to take command of the two legions at Mutina and ensure that the barbarians do not cross into Italia."
Sertorius decided to take the high road. There was a time and place for points scoring. He did not need extra men to win glory in the field.
"In the meantime, I advise that the treasury be replenished as swiftly as possible. But I shall leave that to you, gentlemen."

"The Republic's finances shall be looked after." Aedile Pompeius added "I will make an assessment and recommendations within the week."

Lepidus saw the discussion enfoil, seeing his ally stand up for him. Noteworthy was his co consuls decision to take the lesser posting. Certainly to see if Lepidus would be fit, he had more too lose after all. It wouldnt matter, Lepidus would crush the invaders where they stood. He was sure of it.
"Conscripted fathers, I except the heavy burden my co consul gives me. I will make appropriate offerings to the gods that we may do good in the eyes of the republic." Lepidus said plainly and calmy. He postured himself up,. inhaled and started speaking loudly, almost yelling through the halls of the Curia. "I promise you this Senators of Rome, Rome will not bend, Rome will not break, Rome will smash the invaders from our lands with such terrible vengeance that every man woman and child will known that never again they can antagonize Rome!" Lepidus grasped for breath as he poured his heart and soul into the speech. He looked at his co consul, nodding to him as a sign of respect of his choice. He then looked at Sulla, his right hand for the journey at hand.
